JOSIE

Thankfully everyone is still seated around the table, enjoying breakfast so they don’t pay my late arrival much attention. Except Sarah. Her curious eyes stay on me but the smile on her face indicates she doesn’t mind that I’m a bit behind.

“Good morning,” she says with a grin, leaning over. “Where’s Ben?”

“Not sure. Why?”

“Because you never run behind schedule, and he’s the only other one not at the table.”

“I’m sure he’ll be here soon.” And I’m gonna choke him. Not for the mind-blowing sex but for making me late, thus garnering the attention of the bride who’s now observing the heat rising on my cheeks as I recall the mind-blowing sex with her brother.

“Ah, there he is,” Sarah announces just as I look up to see Ben headed towards me. His panty-dropping smile does more to me than a touch from anyone else ever has. And his cocky ass knows it.

He stops beside me, bends down and whispers in my ear, “You’re lucky you left your room when you did, or I’d be having you for breakfast right now.” His filthy words are topped off with a gentle kiss on my cheek as he nonchalantly sits in the chair beside me.

I can’t look at Sarah, but I know she saw that, and I don’t want to have to answer anything right now. Instead, I reach for my water and take a sip, but make the mistake of glancing over at Ben’s gleaming eyes.

“I’m gonna smother you later,” I whisper, the glass still near my mouth as I take another sip of water.

He leans towards me, his hand tenderly moving over my shoulder as he moves his mouth next to my ear. “We could go upstairs now. Because your mouth on that glass is making me want to taste those lips, and then thinking of yourlipsreminds me of your…other ones.”

He. Did. Not.

Yes. He did just say that. I doubt anyone heard, but we do have some curious onlookers, including Sarah and her mother. And the rest of the table joins in as I take in a little too much water with my gasp of air and end up coughing for a bit as I set down the glass. There’s no way my face isn’t beet red right about now. Damn him.

“Everything good over there?” Sarah asks as I nod my head.

“Yeah. Just drank it a little too fast.” I did indeed. But not the ice water. The delirious Kool-Aid that Ben apparently has dripping from his pores. While we don’t have to exactly keepusa secret, making out at the breakfast table in front of his sister, mom, and the rest of their family isn’t what I had in mind. Time for a change of topic. “Is the stylist still scheduled to be here at two?”

“Yep.” Sarah glances to her phone. “So, we still have plenty time before she arrives.”

Thankful for the successful topic change, I watch Sarah as she looks adoringly over to her soon-to-be husband and talks about the guys’ plan to fish while we get ready. They aren’t doing many things traditionally and wanted to make sure to keep the day as laid back and joyous as possible. And it’s perfect. I’ve never understood why the majority of brides want the day to be hectic and stressful while hosting hundreds of guests in one place for a few hours that will fly by so fast.

Or maybe that’s because I don’t have more than a handful of people that I’d want standing near me on my big day. Sarah, of course, but I don’t even think I want my mom there. I can imagine it, she’ll be complaining while I’m trying to enjoy the day.Oh, shit. That doesn’t scare me as much as the groom who pops into my mind when I envision my fictional wedding day. Mr. Kool-Aid beside me. Whoa.

No.

Shut that shit down, Josie. One night of mind-blowing sex, and his face is cut and pasted onto my future-husband fantasy? Yowza. What concerns me more is how easily he’s assumed the place—then again, no one else has ever really been a contender. Shit balls.

Glad that the meal is finally over, I’m relieved when we all head to the main lobby of the B&B. Mary is going over some detail of the grounds and things the guys can check out when the door swings open. The last person I’d ever expect walks through. Mom.

“What are you doing here?” My first thought is something bad has happened. “Is everything all right?”

“Oh, yeah. Everything is fine. Except that I had to drive here.”

“For what?” I ask, still unable to believe my eyes.

Mom holds up a manila envelope. “You were too busy to come to me, so I brought it to you.”

“Are youseriousright now?” I look around in disbelief, aware of Sarah and Ben both watching with concern and embarrassed that the Sawyers have taken note of my mom’s arrival. They’ve never been fond of her, and I understand why. I’m not fond of her either. “I told you I’d do it next week. Sarah is getting married today. Besides, it’s Saturday. There’s no place to go even if this was an urgent matter.”

“Itisurgent. The buyer will back out if this isn’t handled ASAP. All you have to do is sign in front of a notary, and there just so happens to be one here, according to the person who answered the phone last night.”

My eyes land on Mary, who nods. “I’m able to notarize documents.”

I can’t digest this load of crap. I can’t believe Mom drove all this way because she couldn’t possibly wait a few days. And—you know what, fine. I’m glad. The sooner I sign, the sooner she’ll be done with me.
