Chapter Six

“How are you feeling?” Allison asked as she pulled the car out of the parking lot.

Marigold gingerly adjusted the seatbelt across her waist and looked out of the window.

“I’m still feeling a bit...I don’t know, really. It’s been a day since I found out, and everything’s all over the place.”

“It’s perfectly normal when this comes out of the blue.”

“I thought it would have sunk in by now.”

Allison smiled.

“Things like this don’t sink in immediately. Especially when our brain is still trying to get used to the fact things are going to be different.”

She did have a point. Marigold knew this was going to upend her life, and she wasn’t sure if it would be for the better. Her parents lived in Toronto, and her sister was in Seattle. There was only Allison who she would class as her support system, and even she wouldn’t be able to help her all the time. She would have to find childcare, figure out how to work with a baby, work out pay while she was on maternity leave...

Figure out how to co-parent with whichever guy got you pregnant.

Marigold bit back a groan. She still didn’t even know if she wanted to find out who the father was. It would mean canceling out the other two, and Marigold didn’t think she could do it. It left a sinking feeling in her belly, which just made her more nauseous.

At least they knew the baby was well. The doctor had confirmed she was three months along, and they had given her an ultrasound. It just made everything real seeing the little shape that was her kid wriggling about on the screen. Marigold had wanted to cry at the sight.

She was going to be a mom. And it didn’t seem real.

She stared at the ultrasound picture in her hands. Darren, Jake and Nathan needed to see this. From what Allison had said, they wanted to know.

At least Marigold could rely on her friend to break the news. She didn’t think she could, especially when she was struggling with it herself. According to Allison, the three guys looked like she had brought out a sledgehammer and hit them with it. Darren had even almost buckled and had to lean against the wall. What she found interesting was none of them asked who the father could be, and they all wanted to see her. Allison had said when Marigold was ready, and she would let them know.

Marigold didn’t know if she could face them yet. She felt like this was her fault, even with their precautions. She knew this was just going to make things messy.

She didn’t even know what she was going to say. Could she say anything? What if they wanted nothing to do with it? Marigold doubted it - they were stand-up guys and they would look after her - but she still didn’t know what was going to happen. Having the weight now on her shoulders was making her want to panic.

“Marigold?” Allison pressed gently. “It’s okay to be scared. It’s not something you’re used to.”

“I know, but...I feel like this is my fault.”

“It’s not your fault, and stop thinking like that. It’s nobody’s fault that you got pregnant.” Allison arched an eyebrow. “I’m guessing you were using protection.”

“Of course we were! Jake said that was an absolute must.”

“Then it’s nobody’s fault. It’s something that can happen, and it sounds like the four of you are going to be able to handle the consequences.”

“All four of us?”

Allison smiled.

“Even if you find out who the father is, I can’t see the other two walking away. From what I’ve seen, all of them are crazy about you.”

They were crazy about her? Marigold hadn’t thought that could happen. Jake and Nathan were a couple, so how was...?

Her head was going to hurt trying to figure out.

“Can I ask you something, Allison?”

“Sure.”

“How do you cope with having two guys? How do you manage it?”
