Movement draws me out of my own thoughts. My classmates are walking toward the back of the room where we usually go to practice magic. Even Sadie is up and walking with the rest of them. I have no idea what’s going on.

Before I can decide what I want to do, Adrian is standing in front of me. “Dueling practice. Try not to kill any more classmates, right?”

I glare at him. “I told you, I’m not using that power anymore.”

“I know,” he says. “But channel from everyone around you. Don’t try to use your own magic.”

“Are you going to teach me anything useful?” I ask as I get up from my chair. “I already know that.”

“We’ll talk about it tonight,” he says.

Frustrated, I walk to the back of the room. Sadie catches my eye and waves me over. “You want to try to channel more of my magic?”

“Sure,” I say.

She frowns. “You don’t sound like you’re sold on that.”

“I’m not sure I’m sold on anything right now,” I say.

“Isn’t there a way you can use your other magic without killing someone?” she asks.

“I have no idea,” I say. “But I’m sure as hell not going to test it out on you.”

“I appreciate that,” she says.

Something tightens around my ankles and I look down to see green vines wrapped around my legs. I’m yanked to the ground and land hard.

When I pull myself up, I turn to see Macy laughing. “Got you.”

“That’s how we’re playing, huh?” I say with a grin. I tug the vines off of my legs and reach for Jule’s magic, sending a rush of wind toward Macy.

She stumbles backward but doesn’t fall. Her hands are in front of her and little blue sparks dance on her fingertips.

I know she’s going to throw more magic at me and I reach out, feeling the others around the room. I can feel the tangled mess of magic that I know belongs to a shifter. The smooth, flowing magic of a mage. And then there’s something else. Something darker that I haven’t felt before. I tug on it, pulling it in toward me, letting it flow through me.

The floor shakes as cracks form in the stones under my feet. I work to steady myself as I hold on to the dark magic I found. Vines break through the ground, crawling toward me. I kneel down and set my palm on them, sending the dark magic from me into them.

They shrivel and crumble before my eyes. Blackness spreads down the vines like a disease.

“Stop!” Adrian yells, rushing to the vines. He pulls them, breaking them in half before the death can spread to the other end.

The destroyed vines fall to the ground in brittle pieces.

I look up at Adrian. I watched him use that magic once before but I’ve never felt it like this. In the past, I’d only been able to harness his telepathy.

“That was amazing, Harper,” Macy says. “Well done.”

“No, that was not amazing,” Adrian says. “I shouldn’t need to tell you not to play with magic that you don’t understand.”

“How am I supposed to understand it when you don’t explain it to me?” I demand.

I’m overly aware of the fact that the whole class is silently watching us. “I’ve never felt that in this room before.”

“It’s locked down,” he says. “You shouldn’t have been able to access it.”

“Well, I did,” I say.

“You two seriously need to fuck and get it over with,” Macy says under her breath.
