Harper

By the time Sadie and I head to the cafeteria, I’m feeling in need of a distraction. Maybe there’s a welcome back party we can attend. Or at the very least maybe we can invite a few of the girls over for a movie night.

“Hey,” a male voice calls.

We both turn to see Lance. His gaze is locked on Sadie. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even see me standing next to her. Which I’m totally good with considering I know how she feels about him.

Sadie’s cheeks flush and she straightens. “Hey.”

“Want to ditch this place and grab dinner somewhere more private?” he asks.

Sadie glances over at me and I give her a nod with an encouraging smile. Lance offers his hand and Sadie takes it with a strange little squealing noise. Girl’s got it bad. And I would know. I’m currently juggling too many of those feelings.

I wave to her as she heads down the hall. I have a feeling she’ll be gone all night. The two of them have a lot of catching up to do after the break.

One down for my plans of going out tonight, but I’m sure I can still find something fun to do.

As soon as I step through the doors to the large cafeteria something tugs at me. I turn toward the feeling and I catch sight of Corbin and Damon sitting at their usual table.

Flutters fill my stomach and all thoughts of doing anything else tonight fade. Corbin is exactly who I need tonight. Nobody else understands me the way he does.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Sadie. But she’s had to put up with me for the last two weeks. And she’s occupied for the rest of the night anyway.

Corbin stands and waves to me but I’m already halfway to his table. He meets me in an embrace and his touch is everything I needed. I take his face in my hands and pull him into a kiss. Tingles spread over my skin and warmth spreads through me. Everything about Corbin is comfort and safety and warmth.

I’m an asshole.

I have this amazing man who wants me and what do I do? I fuck someone else in a classroom and pine over a professor who has told me he can’t be with me.

I break the kiss and stare into his gorgeous eyes. “I missed you.”

“I missed you, too,” he says.

“Why don’t you two get a room already,” Damon says.

“Maybe we should,” I say.

Corbin’s eyes widen and I hear Damon start coughing. I turn to look at him and realize he choked on his drink. I guess he wasn’t expecting me to say that. Which is odd considering he’s the one who cornered me in the hallway today.

“You alright?” Corbin asks his brother.

“Fine,” he says. His brow furrows and I notice his eyes have shifted and he’s looking at something behind us.

I turn to see what caught his attention just as a hush falls over the cafeteria.

A group of people in long, flowing black capes walk between the tables. I don’t recognize any of them but they carry an heir of importance with them as they walk.

I watch them walk, inspecting each of them as they continue toward us. The first two males have long dark hair tied behind their heads in low ponytails. Both of them have pointed ears that I’d expect to see on a fae.

The third figure is a woman with lavender hair. A gold tiara sits on top of her head and her eyes are such a bright green they look like they’re glowing. Behind her are two more males with pointed ears. Only these two are fair haired. It’s an odd parade.

They turn and move closer to our table. My pulse races as I realize they’re coming for us.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see some of the students taking a knee or bowing. The woman is wearing a crown, I guess. Could she be the King of Keys wife? Or is she another ruler?

The entourage stops in front of me and fans out around the woman. She takes a step forward until she’s facing me.
