The smoke stops and changes course, moving toward him.

“Get out of the way!” I yell.

Liam looks over at me, then back at the smoke. It’s charging him now. Rolling toward him like fog over a lake.

I feel my magic simmering inside me. It’s now or never. I run toward the smoke, moving in front of a still speechless Liam.

The gray form shifts again, rising from the billowing clouds to take the form of a person.

It stretches long fingered hands toward me.

Liam grabs me, trying to pull me into his room.

“Sadie, get him out of here,” I call as I break his hold.

I stare down the creature as I hear a door close behind me. I know my friends are safe for now but I don’t know how long Sadie will keep Liam away. I can feel his magic calling to me. I can feelhimcalling to me.

Allowing my magic to course through me, I channel it into a single point, feeling it vibrating in my chest. Then I release it all at once.

A blinding white light explodes from my fingertips, filling the hallway like a super nova.

Everything is so bright white that I close my eyes.

Silence is heavy around me. It’s too quiet.

Carefully, I open my eyes and allow myself to adjust to the fading light. The smoke is gone. The creature, whatever it was, is gone.

While my heaven’s light might be too powerful to use while sparring with classmates, it was just what I needed to take out a monster.

“Harper, you okay?” Sadie asks.

I turn around and see her and Liam staring out at me.

“Yeah, I think I got it,” I say.

Liam cracks a smile. “You think?”

I smile back. “You’re right, I totally got it.”

Sadie pulls me into a hug. “Can we go back to checking the door handle before we open it again?”

“Someone summoned this to you?” Liam asks.

“Yes,” I say as I release Sadie from the hug. “And yes, I’ll check the door handle from here on out.”

Liam walks past us over to my room and bends down to inspect the door handle. “This isn’t demonic runes.”

“It’s fae,” Sadie says.

“But why?” Liam asks.

“Someone’s out to get me,” I say.

“Wonder if it’s the person who left the threat at the end of the term,” Sadie asks.

“Someone left you a threat?” Liam asks.

“I always thought he knew about that,” Sadie says to me.
