Harper

Thankfully, my room is a few steps away from Liam’s. I’m exhausted, overwhelmed, and completely in over my head. If I fail to get the pass there is not a third try for me. It’s over. Like forever over. Not even the option to become someone’s servant or magic fuck buddy or whatever I would be to the king of keys.

All I can do to keep from screaming out of pure frustration is to think about my bed. Sleep will go a long way. In the morning, hopefully I will be more clear and can figure out a plan.

By the time I slide my key into the lock, I’m starting to feel better. What’s really changed? Nothing. I was already determined to win the pass. The stakes are just a little higher now.

As soon as I touch the door handle I pull my hand away. “Ouch!”

My palm feels like it’s on fire. I shake my hand then lift it to look at the red area where I was burned. A grouping of symbols appears in the center of the red circle.

Fuck.

I duck down and look at the inscription around my door handle. It’s faint and the runes nearly blend in with the white paint of the door.

I was so worried about everything else I forgot to check for a hex.

Jaw clenched, I straighten and look down the hall. Was this Lucinda’s doing? Was she going to take me out after all? Or was this the promised attack? Or something else?

I turn to look at Adrian’s door. It would be so easy to go to him and ask for help. Get him to clean up my mess.

But that’s all I seem to do in this place. Even Liam just saved my ass from his murderous aunt.

A weight falls over me as the whole experience crashes in around me.

She killed my mother.

She fucking killed my mother.

My mom was a mess. She was a terrible mother. But she was the only one I had. And she was gone thanks to these royal fucks.

I ball my hands into fists. Whatever is coming for me, let it come. I dare it to come.

The ground rumbles and I brace myself as I stare down the hall. I hear a door open and I glance behind me to see Sadie popping her head out.

“What’s going on, Harper?” she asks.

“Oh, I just activated a hex or something,” I say, then I turn back to the hallway.

“Don’t you think you should ask for help?” Sadie says.

I hear her walk out of the room but I keep my eyes ahead of me, waiting for the monster to come.

“Fuck, Harper,” Sadie says. “This is a fae charm. This isn’t normal school kid hexing.”

My brow furrows and I turn back to her. “What do you mean?”

“I’ve seen these markings in old books my parents have,” she says as she walks over to me.

She stands next to me and lifts her hands in front of her. “Get ready.”

I take a deep breath and let my magic come. Not hers, not the steady pulsing magic of Liam’s I can feel nearby. Not the dark swirling magic I feel of Adrian’s. Mine.

A dark smoky cloud rolls down the hall. As it ebbs and flows, the shape changes until it resembles a human form. Then, it shifts again, until it looks like a horse. Then back to a shapeless mass of rolling smoke.

Out of the corner of my eye, I notice another door open and Liam steps out of his room.
