As we get closer, I can hear something scraping against rock. As if the creature has claws its dragging with every step. I shudder.

Whatever we summoned, I know I’m not going to like it.

Another roar. This is so close the ground shakes again. Then another roar, from the opposite direction.

My eyes widen and I look at my friends. “Tell me I’m hearing things.”

Corbin shakes his head.

“There’s two of them?” Liam asks.

The roars sound in unison this time. The floor rumbles and tiny pebbles land on the ground around us as dust falls from the rocky ceiling.

“The other one sounds like it’s behind us,” Sadie says. “What if it goes upstairs?”

“We have to split up,” I say.

“I’ll go with you,” Liam says.

“No,” I shake my head. Liam, Corbin, and Sadie are standing across from me and I point to them. “You three go stop the creature from getting upstairs. We can’t let it out. With three of you, it should go quickly. Then you can find me.”

I’m surprised when they don’t argue. Quickly, they turn and run down the hallway toward the monster.

Damon and I stand in the hallway alone.

“So glad you kept me as the sacrificial lamb for your suicide mission,” he says.

“I kept you because your magic came to me,” I say. “For some reason, I’m pulling it from you. I don’t know why, but it’s there.”

He moves closer to me and sets his hand on the bare skin of my upper arm. He’s silent for a moment. “I feel it.” He grins. “That’s wild.”

I can’t help but smile back at him. “You want to help me kick some monster’s ass?”

“Let’s do it,” he says.
