I follow his lead and close my eyes. Then I reach for his power. I haven’t used anyone’s power while touching them since I first learned to do this. It surprises me how quickly his magic floods through me. I can feel the vibrations of it as it fills me. A faint tingle that reminds me of the muscle rub I used when I attempted to join the track team. It burns, but not uncomfortably. It’s almost soothing to feel his magic and it overpowers my own.

I let it in, let it take over. I want to come across as a demon for this spell. I’m still not sure how it works or what he’s doing, but I play along. Holding his magic for a moment, taking it all in. Then, I send it back to him, reinforcing the spell he’s working on.

The room is silent and I can feel energy growing around us. The hair on my arms feels like it’s standing on edge and I hear a gasp behind me.

A harsh jolt shoots through me like a burst of lightning and I open my eyes. “Ouch.”

The hands holding mine grip tighter and I hold my breath, not wanting to ruin the spell.

I stumble as if the ground is uneven. Then I realize that the ground is moving. I look over at Corbin and he turns his gaze toward the closed door.

Something roars.

The ground shakes again.

Liam lets go of my hand. “I think we called something.”

“Yeah,” I agree.

“The question is,” Sadie says, “what kind of something did we summon?”

“I’ll go out there first,” I say. “Use my light. It should send it away.”

“No way we’re letting you go out there yourself,” Damon says. “Isn’t that why you brought me? So I could help?”

“I don’t want any of you to get hurt,” I say. “Let me try on my own and if I can’t do it, then you take it out so it doesn’t get out of the dungeon.”

“Wait, that wasn’t the plan,” Sadie says. “We didn’t do this for you to be a martyr. You’re getting help.”

Another roar sounds from the hall. The ground shakes again and this time dust falls from the ceiling, raining down on us.

My heart pounds. I don’t want to battle a monster. I don’t even want to be here. I want to be back in my apartment. I know that’s not possible. And I know it’s only half true now. Between my mates and Sadie, I’m not sure I can walk away as easily. I’m not even sure I belong in my old life anymore.

Blowing out a breath I walk toward the door. “Fine, you can follow me. But let me try first.”

“We’re not letting you get out of your contract with the king that easily,” Sadie jokes.

I look back at her and smile. She knows I don’t want to die. And we all know this is my only option.

Corbin darts in front of me. “I’ll open the door.”

“Such a gentleman,” Damon says. I can hear him rolling his eyes.

Corbin ignores the comment and opens the door a crack. I squeeze in next to him and peek out.

The hallway is empty.

He opens the door all the way and our little group spills into the darkened stone hallway. I hear another roar but it’s coming from deeper into the dungeon. At least the creature isn’t going toward the main school building.

In silent agreement, the five of us walk toward the sound. We pause at turns and listen for movement or roars.

With each step, my pulse rises. I take deep breaths and try to think of the best way to take the beast down. Heaven’s light is my first choice. It should be quick and efficient. Plus, it gives me a big boost on the ranks.

Even as I’m thinking about using my own magic, someone else’s magic is winding with mine. I didn’t summon it or call to it, but it’s there, caressing my magic in a familiar and comfortable way.

But it’s the last person I’d expect.

I glance over at Damon, wondering if he can feel the connection our magic has forged. Whatever the cause, I’m pulling magic from him. I’m not sure why but my instincts tell me I might need it to defeat the creature we’re hunting.
