I know I’m not prepared to battle a monster. Every time I’ve used my magic, it’s been an accident. And it was pure luck I sent the shadow away.

There’s something different right now, though. Damon’s magic courses through my veins, giving me a boost of confidence. I still can’t explain why it’s here. I didn’t seek it out that I know of. And he seemed as surprised as I was that I had it.

Either way, it’s inside me. And I didn’t call it. I’m not doing anything to hold it, but it’s here.

We’re silent as we move closer to the sounds of the monster. With each step, tension spreads and I worry more and more that I made a really bad call agreeing to this.

I wrinkle my nose against a foul stench wafting toward us. It’s like sulfur mixed with the copper scent of blood. There’s another element I can’t identify but it reminds me of death. Like something rotting. I gag against the smell and fight the urge to throw up.

“You know what that smell is?” Damon whispers.

I shake my head, afraid to open my mouth. I don’t want to inhale that scent. It’s awful.

“How did I let you talk me into this?” He shakes his head. “Why can’t I stay away from you?”

“Cause you’re my friend,” I say, not really sure if that’s the best word to describe our strange relationship. Friends don’t usually kiss in the storage room. But his brother is my mate. We have to get along, don’t we?

“I don’t walk toward the scent of a flesh eater for my friends,” he says. “I’m doing this for Corbin.”

“So we’re not friends?” I’m surprised how much the question hurts. It’s like a punch in the gut.

“I don’t know,” he says. “Whatever we are, you’re trouble.”

“Thanks,” I say. “Don’t worry, I won’t ask for your help again.”

“It’s not that,” he says. “I want to help you. But that’s not normal for me. I don’t help people. I don’t like people.”

I glance over at him. He’s looking straight ahead as we take careful steps down the hallway. He looks so focused, so deep in thought. I don’t dare speak.

“Why can’t I stay away from you?” He looks over at me and his gaze sends shivers down my spine.

I look away, unable to handle the intensity. He does the same thing to me that he’s accusing me of. Just like him, I feel drawn to him. Even my magic lures us together. It feels wrong. But it also feels right.

“I’ve shared women with him before,” he says.

That stops me in my tracks. “With Corbin?”

“Yeah, of course,” he says. “You’ve figured out sex isn’t taboo here, right? It’s fun. Who doesn’t enjoy it?”

I don’t answer. Cause he’s right. Sex is amazing. It was amazing with Corbin and I have to admit, I have fantasized about Damon. I just never imagined them both together. At the same time. And now that is all I can think about.

Shit. Thanks for that visual. It’s making my panties wet just thinking about it and now is not the time for that.

“But sharing you wouldn’t be the same,” he says.

“How come?” I say, instantly regretting it.

He cocks an eyebrow.

“I mean, what makes me different?” I ask.

“You’re his mate. That’s not the same as a one-time fuck,” he says. “You and him, you’ve got the rest of your lives together. If we can save you from this contract with the king, that is.”

He starts walking again and I quickly fall into step beside him. None of my mates seem to mind if I have sex with other people, but I can see how brothers would complicate things. And honestly, my respect for Damon skyrockets right there. He comes across as an asshole most of the time, but deep down, there’s a good guy in there.
