“They have to enter the building through a ley line. Then they’ll travel to the summons point,” he says. “Well, usually. There was that second monster.”

I jump. “I forgot about that. We have to get to them, see if they need help.”

“You’re not in any shape to help anyone,” he says.

“You can,” I say.

He smirks. “Another reason to keep me around, huh? Save both of your boyfriends’ asses?”

Something comes over me at his words and without thinking, I turn toward him and rise to my toes. Before I can stop myself, I’m planting my lips on his.

For a second, he’s still, as if too shocked to react. Then, he wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me into him.

His lips are soft and warm and his kiss is hungry. I press into him, deepening the kiss. Everything about it feels so right.

But I know we don’t have time to explore whatever this is right now. I pull away. “Thank you.”

“If that’s the payback for helping you, sign me up for everything,” he says.

I shift out of his grip and take a few steps before extending my hand to him. I’m feeling more steady now, but I want his touch.

He accepts my hand and the two of us walk down the hall toward the place where we split up with the others.

When we reach it, I’m feeling more confident. I let go of his hand and start jogging. As I move down the hall, I miss the feeling of his skin against mine.

“Sadie? Liam? Corbin?” I call down the hall.

I pass the classroom and don’t hear anything.

“Hello?” I call.

“Corbin?” Damon calls.

We turn down another hall and call for them again.

“Harper?” Sadie’s voice echoes through the stone hallway. “Harper, hurry!”

I know something is wrong. Damon and I race toward Sadie and as soon as we turn the corner my heart falls.

Liam is on the ground. His shirt is torn open and his chest is covered in blood. I drop down next to him and brush his hair away from his eye. “Liam, talk to me.”

He manages a weak smile. “We got the monster.”

I look behind him and see a pile of goo where a monster likely stood. Then I look back down at Liam. “Hang in there. We’re getting help, okay?”

“Sadie, go get Adrian,” I say.

“Professor Cardale?” she asks.

“Yes, go!” I shout.

She takes off and I focus my attention back on Liam. The gash on his chest doesn’t look good and his skin is pale. Beads of sweat gleam on his forehead. I can’t lose him.

“Liam, talk to me,” I say, remembering that it’s important to keep people awake. I’m pretty sure that’s advice for a concussion, but it’s all I’ve got. So I go with it.

“Your eyes are so pretty,” he says.

I smile. “You’re delirious.”
