The warm fuzzies dissolve almost as quickly as they arrived.

Standing in front of us is the most terrifying creature I’ve ever seen.

It’s easily eight feet tall with sagging, loose gray skin. It’s got multiple legs and arms, almost like a spider. Each of its appendages is capped in razor sharp claws. A puddle of ooze sits around the creature.

It opens the massive mouth in the center of its face and roars. The ground shakes and I cover my head to protect it from the falling debris.

Hot air mixed with saliva hits me and I swallow down the vomit that rises to my throat.

It takes me another second to realize I wanted this face off. I wanted to fight a monster.

What the fuck was I thinking?

“Go, Harper,” Damon says.

His words snap me out of it and I step in front of him as I reach my hands toward the monster.

I let my magic flow through me. It mixes with Damon’s in an unusual way, but I ignore it, and focus on finding my angel magic.

The creature screeches and I wince. It’s a terrible sound and I want to cover my ears. But I resist and throw my power toward the monster. Tears stream down my face and I’m already breathless as the white light shoots from my hands.

I’m nearly knocked to the ground from the force of the magic coming from me but I manage to steady myself.

The sound of screaming fills the hall and it takes a moment for me to realize I’m the source of the screaming. I’m throwing everything I have against the beast.

A wave of nausea rolls through me and I feel weak. My head is spinning and I sway. I know I’m spent and I drop my hands just as I collapse to the ground.

Strong arms catch me before I fall and I lean my head against Damon’s strong chest.

My eyes flutter and I fight to keep them open. The light around us is fading and all I should be worried about is the monster. I should be thinking of what I’ll do if it’s still there when the light is gone.

Instead, I’m thinking about how amazing Damon smells and how nice his arms feel wrapped around me.

Something is very wrong with me.

Damon laughs and I look up at him.

“You got it,” he says.

I turn to look in the place the monster was. All that’s left is a pile of gray goo. Unfortunately, the smell lingers.

I force myself to stand and sway on my feet. Damon’s hands are on my hips, holding me steady.

“Thanks,” I say.

“For what? I stood there. You did all the work,” he says.

“You’re helping me now,” I say. “Plus, I borrowed some of your magic.”

“So that’s what you needed me for?” he asks.

“I don’t know why your magic came to me like that, but I’m sure it helped,” I say.

I take a few uneasy steps toward the pile of goo.

“Careful,” Damon says, still keeping his hands on me.

“Looks like it came down the hall there,” I say. “How come it didn’t appear where we were?”
