“If he can’t get out of there and control his emotions properly, he’s going to shift.”

“Then the king’s secrets will be revealed,” I say.

Adrian stops walking. “There’s been some buzz lately. A rumor that the king had an affair with a shifter woman.”

“No,” I say.

Adrian nods. “I thought it was the truth threatening to get out, but now I suspect it’s the king’s way of covering himself if Liam shifts.”

“He’d do that to his own son?” I ask.

“What’s worse is what will happen to all the people in the hospital room if he shifts in there,” Adrian says. “Liam repressed that part of him his whole life. He’s got no control.”

I cover my mouth with my hand. The staff in the hospital is trapped with a ticking time bomb. “How long?”

“Full moon next week,” Adrian says. “With his emotional state, I’m guessing he won’t be able to resist.”

“We have to do something,” I say. “We have to get him out of there.”

“Harper, Liam doesn’t want you to,” Adrian says.

“Why?” I ask. “I want to help him.”

“Because the king is using this as Liam’s punishment,” he says.

“For what? For being my mate?” I ask.

“Yes,” Adrian says. “He told Liam that if he leaves the hospital, he’ll come get you. No more shot at the pass. No chance to win your freedom. Game over.”

I shake my head. “No. There has to be another way.” A few days ago, I considered giving in to the king just to save my friends. Now, I’m faced with the real possibility of that happening. I know Liam would never forgive me if I traded him for me. But I know I can’t sacrifice his happiness or the lives of those people working in the hospital.

“Harper, I know you don’t want to hear this, but the king wins this round,” Adrian says.

I’m not ready to believe that. I can’t let that happen.

And I have to figure out a way to get Liam out before the full moon.
