“Same,” I say.
“They still won’t let you in?” Adrian asks.
I shake my head.
He sighs and guides me around the corner. “Wait here.”
I feel his magic rush into me as he walks past me.
I peek around the corner to watch him.
He knocks on the door. The same nurse who keeps turning me down greets him. Her face lights up and thanks to Adrian’s magic, I can hear her thoughts.
Well, hello handsome.“How can I help you, Professor Cardale?” she asks, her tone flirty.
Jealousy swirls in my gut. I sort of want to claw her eyes out.
Gear down, Adrian’s words enter my mind.I’m yours.
I can’t help but smile.
“I need to check on the Drake boy,” he says. “The King wants an update.”
“Of course, professor,” the nurse says.
I lift an eyebrow. Adrian is using his position and lying for me. To check on one of my other mates.Fuck. I am a very lucky girl.
Don’t you forget it. Adrian’s voice fills my head.

The connection is severed suddenly and I make a very unattractive startled noise. Closing my eyes, I try to bring it back. No luck. Adrian locked me out.
Why would he do that?
I’m in the dark now as I wait for him to come back out the door. Keeping my eyes glued on it, I tap my fingers on the wall as I wait.
Finally, it opens again and Adrian walks out. He’s smiling as he waves to the nurse. “Thanks, again.”
He walks out the door, not looking at me until he hears the sound of the door closing.
I dart over to him. “So?”
“He’s recovering well,” Adrian says. “The claws were toxic so it’ll be a while but he probably could leave.”
“Why won’t they let him out?” I ask.
“I’ll give you one guess,” he says.
“Daddy’s orders?” I ask.
“You got it,” he says. “He knows about the two of you. And he doesn’t want Liam interfering.”
“He can’t keep him there,” I say. “He’s miserable.”
“It’s worse than that,” he says. “He’s fighting the change.”
“The change?” It takes a few long seconds before I realize what Adrian means. “No. He doesn’t want that. He doesn’t want to shift.”
