Harper’s face scrunches up when she’s concentrating. It’s adorable. I smile as I watch her add the last ingredient to the potion.

“There, done.” She looks totally satisfied with the finished product.

The potion we’ve spent the last few weeks perfecting is a pale lavender color and looks as we predicted it would.

“I think we got it,” I say.

“Want to test it out?” she says, raising her eyebrows.

“Not in here,” I say. If we did the math correctly, this potion will convert from liquid to purple flames when it comes in contact with any surface other than the glass jar holding it. It’s not something I’m eager to try. At least not in the library.

“Maybe we should test it out somewhere where there’s less paper?” I ask.

She laughs and the librarian glares at us.

“I think we’ve worn out our welcome,” I say.

“Come on,” Harper whispers. “Let’s take it outside and test it out.”

I start packing up the books and notes we used. Our potion isn’t as deadly as some of our classmate’s creations, but I think it made Harper happy to create something beautiful from something that was normally destructive.

I’ve enjoyed working with her the last few weeks. We haven’t spoken about our conversation when we started all this. Or the kiss in the hall. But I have a feeling it’s because she’s been spending so much time with Liam and my brother.

I haven’t told her, but I suspect she and I share the same bond. I imagine she’s already overwhelmed with three mates. Telling her I think I might be her fourth mate would probably send her packing. That’s the last thing I want to do.

I’ve been drawn to her since we first met. And every time we’re alone I feel a pull to her that is nearly impossible to resist.

She’s special, though. Not like other girls. I’m not willing to risk scaring her away or moving too fast. For Harper Love, I’m willing to wait.

That right there should be my clue that this isn’t in my head. I’ve never felt this way about a female before. I’ve never stuck around for anyone.

Harper is worth a lifetime of waiting.

We walk down the hall and through the main doors. It’s a cool spring evening and the sky is full of pink clouds as the sun sets. Twilight is my favorite time of day. It’s a time of transition, of hope. It means you survived the day and have the whole evening ahead of you.

I’ve always thought more clearly at night and as the sun sets, it brings a promise of clarity and peace.I know it’s time to tell Harper. I know I need to be honest with her.

We walk through the garden and she seems to know exactly where she wants to go. I follow, distracted by thinking of ways I can tell her what I feel.

What I really feel.

Not just that Ihavefeelings for her. I have to tell her that I can’t live without her. That I think we’re meant to be together.

We cut through the hedge maze and flutters fill my stomach as I recall our first kiss. She thought I was Corbin and it was pouring rain. It was still the best kiss of my life.

Instead of heading toward the gazebo, she takes a different route until she stops in front of a stone bench.

“This should do to test it out,” she says as she sets down her bag. “Stone shouldn’t burn so if the flames work on this, we know we’ve got it.”

I set down my bag and carefully remove the lid from the potion. “Only one way to find out.”

She looks tense as she waits for me to pour some of the liquid onto the bench.

I hold my breath, being careful to only pour a drop. The last thing we need is for the fire to burn out of control. It should be safe and shouldn’t be able to actually burn anyone, but we haven’t tried it yet. If we miscalculated anything, we could have created a weapon instead of doing the opposite.
