Our assignment was to make our own spell or potion. We modified a liquid fire spell to render it harmless and change the colors. As far as I knew, most people don’t see a need for decorative fire.

I wasn’t sure where Harper got the idea, but apparently the library inspired it.

As soon as the liquid touches the stone bench, a purple flame breathes to live. It spreads over the stone, dancing and flickering in the dim light.

Harper laughs. “We did it!”

“I think we did,” I say as I wave my fingers over the flames. They feel warm, but not like normal fire. I get a little braver and lower my hand until I’m all the way to the stone.

The fire spreads to my hand and up my arm, tickling me as it moves. Now I’m laughing.

“We actually did it,” I say.

The fire is beautiful and looks like normal flames. Well, normal if they were purple. It moves and flickers and travels the same way fire does. But there’s no distraction. No pain.

Harper runs her fingers down my arm through the path of the fire. “That’s amazing.”

When she brushes her fingertips over my skin it sends shivers down my spine. Even the smallest touches by her render me helpless.

She whispers the counter spell and the flames vanish. I’m still staring at her hand on my arm.

“We did it,” she says. “Finally finished with that project.”

A wave of sadness rolls through me. We got to spend hours alone every day for the last few weeks. Time with just the two us. Sure, she waved to me when she’d drop by my dorm to see Corbin. But the two of them would disappear into his room or leave and go out together.

I should have been jealous for all the time Corbin got, but I found myself relying on this time.

Since when was I satisfied with time working on a project for class?

But now that was at risk of going away. I can’t let that happen.

“Harper,” I say. “I have to tell you something.”

“Yes?” She looks up at me expectantly, her hand still on my arm.

“Remember when I told you that I have feelings for you?” I ask.

She nods.

“I think it’s more than a crush,” I say. “It’s deeper than that. More real.”

I can’t bring myself to say the words. I have to tell her eventually. She needs to know. But there’s still a part of me that worries I’ll scare her away.

“I feel it too,” she says. “What I have with your brother…”

“Is between you and him,” I say. “And has nothing to do with me and you.”

“But he’s your brother,” she says.

“Harper,” I say. “He’s my brother, which means he wants me to be happy. Just like I want him to be happy.”

Harper is quiet for a moment and I think she’s considering my words. She has to know Corbin almost as well as me by now. She knows he’s not the jealous type. And he’s also one of the most loyal friends. While nobody wants to share their mate, he’s taking it better than anyone I’ve ever seen.

“I can’t stay away from you,” Harper finally says. “Even when I thought I didn’t like you, I was still drawn to you.”

I brush a strand of hair away from her eyes. “Give in, Harper.”

She doesn’t say a word, but I swear I can feel her relaxing. She stares at me, her blue eyes taking in all of me. She sees me. Really sees me, flaws and all.
