Harper

When we leave the office we walk right into Damon, Corbin, and Sadie.

Sadie’s got her hands on her hips and she looks pissed. “I’m sure that news is going to go over well.”

“Or warned us?” Corbin says.

“Or tried something else, anything else?” Damon says.

“I was done waiting,” Liam says. “It’s the last option.”

“What about that binding thing?” Sadie asks.

“What binding thing?” The twins ask in unison.

“What do you think my father would do if Harper got rid of her magic? You think he’s going to let that go unpunished. For any of us?” Liam asks.

Adrian rounds the corner. “Liam, why did you do that?”

“I don’t need a lecture from my father’s errand boy,” Liam says. “Out of all of us, you’re the one most likely to run to his side and do his bidding.”

“That’s not fair,” I say. “Adrian would never do that.”

“Yeah?” Liam says. “Then why is he at this school? And why is he watching over you? And why won’t he help you?”

My chest tightens. “Liam, you know he has a good reason.”

“What is it, then?” he asks.

“I’m with Liam on this one,” Damon says. “The prof here keeps running off and telling us he can’t help you.”

“Please stop this, you guys,” I say. “In case you haven’t forgotten, we’re about to have the king on our asses.”

“And whose fault is that?” Damon says.

“No more,” I say. “No more fighting. Someone just give me something. Any idea, please.”

“I told you,” Liam says. “It’s going to be fine. Unless your reaper boyfriend is planning to turn you over to my dad before my aunt gets here.”

“He’s been keeping my sister alive,” Adrian says.

“What?” Liam says.

“My sister, Bella,” he says. “She was cursed when she was young. Your father keeps her alive in exchange for my service. Watching over Harper was supposed to be the final favor, but I can’t risk him changing his mind.”

“Adrian,” I walk over to him and set my hand on his arm. “Why didn’t you tell me this?”

“It’s not your burden,” he says.

“Yes, it is,” I say. “You have to let me help you, too.”

“That’s sweet and all, and I feel for you, man, but it’s going to compromise this,” Damon says.

“That’s why I’ve been staying away,” Adrian says. “Can you imagine having to choose between your mate and your last living relative?”

“You’re not going to have to.” I turn to Liam. “You really think your aunt is going to take care of this?”
