“I know she will,” he says. “I hope you can get used to me being a nobody. I just lost my inheritance.”

“I don’t care about that,” I say, still stunned by his actions.

“I had a feeling you might do something stupid,” a voice says.

All of us tense and I turn to see the king walking down the hall. He approaches alone, but not too far behind him I can see a group of men in suits. His guards, I’m guessing.

“Dad,” Liam says, not hiding the surprise in his voice.

“But I’m not your dad,” he says, “at least that’s what you just told everyone.”

“You can’t have her,” Liam says, stepping in front of me.

Corbin, Damon, and Adrian join him.

“Adrian? You as well?” the king says. “Betrayal from my own son is one thing. But you? You’ve always been loyal.”

He stops walking and closes his eyes then takes a deep breath. A wicked grin spreads on his lips as he opens his eyes. “Mating bonds. Four of them. That means the little cherub is even more powerful than I hoped. It takes someone very in tune with their magic to find that many mates.”

“You’ve lost, father,” Liam says. “Leave now. Go into hiding. It’s over.”

The king laughs. “Hiding? Can you imagine me, running away?”

His cold laugh sends a shiver through me and I’m grateful for the barrier of my mates between us.

Sadie moves closer to me and slides her arm through mine so our elbows are linked. Neither of us says a word.

“I really was going to give you until the end of the semester,” the king says. “But you failed my test, Liam. When I let you know I was on my way, you went straight for the betrayal. If you’d have remained loyal, we’d be sharing a charming visit instead of this.”

“No visit with you is charming,” Liam says. “And you’re not going to touch Harper. You might as well get out of here before your sister takes you out.”

“Such a disappointment you turned out to be,” he says. “But I’ll deal with you later.”

He lifts his hand and I feel a pull from my necklace. When I look down I see that it’s floating straight out, as if the pendant is trying to fly to the king.

I dig my heels into the ground, but I’m sliding along the floor.

My mates and Sadie grab hold of me until all of us are sliding toward the king.

A burst of purple light explodes from the pendant and everyone is thrown off me. I shout and reach for them, twisting and fighting as I try to resist the pull of the necklace.

When the light fades, I’m standing in front of the king alone.

I look around, frantic to see my friends. “Where are they? What did you do to them?”

“Don’t worry, if you play nicely, I’ll bring them back,” he says.

“Bring them back from where?” I demand. “Where are they?”

“This hall is on a ley line,” he says with a grin. “I sent them away. If you cooperate, I’ll call them back before they have too many limbs torn from their bodies.”

My heart races and heat rises in my chest. I try to lunge for the king but all I can do is yell at him. My arms and legs won’t move.

He smiles. “You can try to fight me all you want, Harper. But you won’t win. You might be powerful but you’re untrained and never learned how to unleash your true potential.”

I grit my teeth, pissed at myself for not pushing to learn more from Adrian. He never seemed to want to teach me anything about using my magic. He was so focused on having me use the magic of others.

I blink a few times as I dwell on that thought. He was determined that I learn how to channel magic that wasn’t mine. What if that was for a reason?
