Taking a deep breath, I search for the king’s magic. If I can find the threads of what he’s doing, I might be able to undo my invisible chains.

His magic swirls through the air and it’s similar to magic I’ve felt before. It reminds me of Damon’s.

I remember when we were connected and I was able to use his magic to help me take down the monster so easily.

Now, I’m no longer thinking of only saving myself. Whatever spell he used to send my friends away has to be reversible.

I feel for the magic, sensing the spells hanging in the air around me. They linger like smoke after a firework. It’s like there’s a trail from the spell he cast.

Pulling on his magic, I work to unravel what he cast. But as I work, I’m moved even closer to him, the necklace dragging me to him.

The movement stops and I’m standing right in front of him. I can’t keep trying to undo his spell. Hopefully whatever I was able to send back was enough.

Now, I have to break the hold he has on me.

“ That’s better,” he says. “You are going to enjoy your position so much better if you cooperate. If you go along with it, you’ll retain some freedom. Prestige, possibly. You can sit alongside me.”

“You know I’ll never do that,” I say.

“Then you’ll be locked in chains and kept away,” he says.

His magic is flowing through me, twisting with mine. I consider sending it to the necklace, then I remember that it is also protecting me. Plus, I can’t feel the magic from the pendant. I can only feel the magic flowing around the room.

The king grabs my upper arm. “Time to go, little one.”

I tug my arm away and quickly release a burst of light. It’s a mixture of my magic and his and I have no idea what it will do.

All I know is that his hold on me releases.

I run.
