Harper

I run straight for the only place where I know there are ley lines. Running into a dungeon when you may or may not have just killed a demon king might not be the best idea.

My pulse races as I fly down the hall. I have no idea what kind of magic I used or what damage I did. All I can think about is finding my mates.

I tried to trace the spell, to undo what he did. But I’m making this up as I go. My magic training has been limited and I know I’ve got a lot to learn.

Despite my misadventures at Brimstone, I’m starting to feel like this is the right place for me to be. Maybe not Brimstone itself, but the Underworld. Where I can learn how to fully use my magic and be around people who understand what it’s like.

But that’s not an option for me if I can’t get out of this bargain with the king. A tiny flicker of hope spreads as I consider that I might already be out of the contract. If he’s already dead…

I run down the steps as fast as I can without falling on my face. The air is cooler and despite the fact that I’m making my way underground, I feel safer than I did above.

I sprint past Adrian’s classroom and turn down the hall. I’m heading toward the place where I killed the monster in the hopes that that’s where the ley line is.

Ahead, voices echo through the stone corridors and my heart races. Either my mind is playing tricks on me or those are my people. My mates. Sadie. I can hear them.

“Hello?” I call as I pick up the pace.

They don’t get a chance to answer before I run right into someone.

“Harper!” Corbin laughs as he catches me. “What happened?”

“He sent you all away and then he tried to take me,” I say. “But I hit him with something. Magic. Then I ran here.”

“Is he dead?” Liam asks.

I turn to look at him. His expression is impassive but I can feel the tangle of emotions inside him.

I shake my head. “I don’t know. I didn’t wait to see.”

“He’s not dead,” Adrian says.

“How do you know?” Sadie asks.

“I can feel him,” he says before turning to Liam. “Can’t you feel him?”

Liam nods. “I think he’s still alive.”

“What do we do?” I ask. “Do you think your aunt can handle him? Should we hide?”

Fog rolls down the hall, covering our feet. It begins to rise.

“Um, guys?” I ask.

“Harper, I’m coming for you,” the king’s voice booms all around us. I feel it deep inside me as if it shook my bones.

The fog has filled the hall now making my friends into little more than shadows. I grip Corbin’s hand.

“We can’t wait for your aunt,” I say. “We have to bind my magic to someone. He can’t have it. We can’t give him this power.”

“Follow my voice,” Adrian says.

I stumble forward, keeping hold of Corbin as I follow the moving shapes in front of us.

“There’s a door on your right,” Adrian says. “Everyone inside.”
