‘How will they get their stuffies to you if they don’t meet you?’

‘I don’t meet any of my clients.’ She shrugged. ‘I’ve got a PO Box that I ask them to send their bears to. I go pick them up, repair them, then send them back. That way, I don’t have to meet anyone.’

He looked at her, really looked at her. Sophia felt as though he was looking right into her heart, into her soul.

‘What happened to you?’ he asked.

‘What do you mean?’ she said, her voice trembling.

Wolf took a step toward her, his blue eyes shining. She didn’t want to move away — couldn’t. ‘I can feel it,’ he said. ‘Something happened to you, didn’t it? That’s why you’re scared of people seeing you. That’s why you’re holed up in a place like this.’ He paused for a moment. ‘That’s why you gave me a false name.’

It wasn’t just her voice trembling. Her whole body started to shake as the imposing figure of the grim-faced biker moved closer and closer. She felt like she was a moon, trapped in orbit around him, unable to break away.

‘I-it’s not a false name.’

‘You don’t have to lie to me,’ he said. ‘Because I’m like you. Something happened to me, too. But I think you know that already, don’t you?’

She did know it. As soon as he said those words, she could recognize the hurt in him. The pain. She nodded without thinking about it.

‘Why don’t you stay here?’ The question stopped her dead. It felt as though she’d been punched in the gut.

‘Stay here?’

‘Sure. You can work here if you like. Keep doing your stuffie repairs, but you could work in the bar, too.’

Work in a biker bar?

‘I don’t think so,’ she said.

‘You don’t have to work here, but you could stay sleeping here until you find somewhere to stay. No pressure. Stay forever if you want.’ He looked so sincere, so full of empathy and truth. He was like her mirror image. All she’d done is lie, and all he’d done is open his heart and tell her the truth. ‘What I’m trying to say is… I want to help.’ He held out his hand.

Her hand moved toward him of its own accord. Then, what she realized what she was doing, she tugged it back.

‘I’d never accept help from a biker.’

‘Not even one as devilishly attractive as me?’

For a moment — the smallest amount of time imaginable — she was caught in those eyes, in that smile. Then, she did what her body had been telling her to do all day. She turned and ran.

CHAPTER 4

Why had he said it? Everything had been going so fucking well until he let his cockiness, his arrogance, get the better of him.

Now, twenty-four hours had gone by and she hadn’t been back once.

Wolf dug the hammer’s claw into the hard wood of the seating booth. Things had been going so damn well with Diane. Or whatever her name was. It felt like they were really connecting. She had seemed interested in him and he wasdefinitelyinterested in her.

In his mind, as they talked, he was imagining what the other guys in the MC might say as he introduced her to them.

‘This is Diane. She repairs stuffies for a living. Yep. You bet your ass she’s my Little.’ He imagined the looks of jealousy and respect from his brothers.

Of course, he didn’treallycare about making the rest of the MC jealous. It would just be a little bonus. Mind you, it would be interesting to see their faces if he were to settle down with a pretty Little. Give up his hard drinking and womanizing.

Pah. Call yourself a womanizer? You haven’t had a sniff of a woman in over a year.

It was true. In theory, Wolf was ‘open for business.’ He was single and ready to mingle. In practice, though, any time he seemed to get close to having a shot with a woman, he just shut right down. Either he’d tell them he wasn’t interested or he’d do some kind of self-sabotage trick. Like drinking too much. That was his usual one.

He eyed up the liquor he’d brought with him that morning. It’d be so easy to pop the cap on a bottle of Monkey Shoulder, loosen himself up. But for some reason, he didn’t feel like it. He hadn’t touched a drop of booze since he’d found out abouther— that was longer than he’d gone in… well, he couldn’t exactly remember how long.
