‘If it hadn’t been for me taking in Sophia, he—’

‘This isn’t your fault,’ Tati said resolutely. ‘And it’s not Sophia’s fault. Her father is an animal. It’s a miracle she turned out human.’ To his surprise, Tatiana took hold of his hand and stroked him gently. He looked into her red-rimmed eyes as she said, ‘Marcus thought of you like a son. He told me so many times. He was proud of you. Even when you were drinking heavily and acting like an ass, he loved you. He would hate it if you blamed yourself for his death.’

She sniffed, clearly holding back the tears. Wolf was struggling with it himself. ‘Tati, I promise, I’m gonna do everything I can to avenge him.’

‘I know you are, sugar, I know you are.’ She leaned in, kissed him on the forehead.

He couldn’t believe the strength of the woman. More than that, he couldn’t believe her heart. To show him so much love in the face of what she’d just been through — what she’d just lost — was tough to comprehend.

‘So, what are we gonna do?’ Rainer asked.

Marcus shook his head. ‘Wish I had a clear idea.’

He knew that Giovanni was based in Boston. But he couldn’t just head to such a big city and hope to bump into them. He also knew that — most likely — he was going to plan to marry Sophia to Whip.

Ugh. The thought made his stomach churn. His poor Little girl, being treated like a commodity. It was sickening.

The Death Division would surely know about the wedding. But how did that help? It’s not like they even knew where the Death Division…

‘Well, shit,’ Wolf said. ‘I know what we need to do.’

‘What is it, brother?’ Rainer asked.

‘You’re not gonna like it,’ he said, pulling himself up a little, feeling the pain of the gunshot wound in his thigh, ‘but you don’t get a choice in the matter. And Baron, there’s something I need from you.’

CHAPTER 21

The ride was painful. Every time he hit the throttle he could feel the gunshot.

Obviously, the doctor had advised him not to put himself into a potentially dangerous situation again so soon. But he didn’t have any choice. He had to move, and he had to move now. There was no way that Wolf was going to let Sophia suffer for a second more than he had to.

And as for her father…

Fuck revenge being served cold. Wolf wanted the revenge he was going to mete out to be roasting hot. Hot as the fires of hell. He wanted Giovanni to feel it, to never forget it. You don’t fuck with The Drifters.

He was gonna have that chiseled into his damn tomb stone.

When Wolf had told Rainer and Baron his plan, they’d both balked at the idea. They’d said it would never work, that it was a suicide mission. After they’d calmed down, they both insisted that they accompany him.

Thing is, Wolf had lied to them both. He’d kept his real plan a secret. Not because he didn’t trust Rainer and Baron — he did, with his life. But he knew that there was a rat in The Drifters. Someone who’d sold them out, over and over again.

The identity of Marcus’ source in the Death Division had died with the Prez, but there had to be someone else, inside The Drifters, working against them.

So, Wolf couldn’t take any chances. If anyone inside his own club found out what he was doing, his plan would be ruined. He had to do this alone.

The sky was inky, the air was cold. He was driving without his headlights, which he knew was hugely dangerous, but he couldn’t run the risk of anyone at the lab seeing him coming. This time, he wasn’t going in all guns blazing. He was going to break into their lab like a ghost and take what he needed.

He left his bike near to where he’d left it the first time. He’d picked a cloudless night. Out here, away from the city, the moon and stars bathed the whole country in a stark, silver light.

As he approached the compound, he was amazed by how quiet it was. There were a few high-pitched chirps from crickets and there was the occasional mournful hoot of an owl. But that was it. He was aware of his own footsteps as he tried desperately to avoid anything that could snap and give the game away.

Probably, no-one was here.

Probably, if they were here, they wouldn’t be listening out.

Probably, it they were listening out, they wouldn’t hear him.

So much was resting on his shoulders. Every second that passed made things worse and worse for Sophia. The next thirty minutes or so could be the most important time in his life, and he wasn’t going to take any chances.
