She felt the walls of her cage closing in around her and she had no choice but to admit defeat.

She was trapped.

Suddenly there was shouting coming from the other side of the door and, distantly, the sound of a lone gunshot.

She frowned, turning a questioning look at Dmitri, but he looked just as concerned as her. This was not a normal occurrence then. No late-night target practice that happened on the regular.

Another gunshot brought them all to their feet.

“Secure the room,” Dmitri told the handsome young bodyguard by the door.

He gave another nod and left, closing the door behind him, locking it tight.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

Dmitri looked to his father, then said, “It appears we’ve had a security breach.”

Chapter 6 - Dmitri

Vasili had a shocked expression on his face that perfectly matched the emotion in Dmitri’s chest. This had never happened before. Not in one hundred and fifty years. How was it even possible? They had guards stationed across the entire estate. There was no possibility to sneak past the security system, but in case someone found a loophole, his men would take them down before they even knew what hit them.

“What do we do now?” Alina asked.

“We wait,” Dmitri said.

“We just sit here?” she asked.

“What would your father have you do? Strap on a gun and fight?”

She shut up at that, but he couldn’t shake the thought that Semyon Kumarin actually would expect his children to protect him if it came to that. Would she take a bullet for her father? He had a feeling she would.

There was utter silence.

He wanted to reach for his cell phone, send a text to Misha, get an update. But he refrained. It would signal weakness to his father. Patience in all things exuded the sort of self-possession Vasili insisted all his sons should master. So, Dmitri waited.

Alina shifted in her seat. She sent a small, awkward smile his father’s way. Vasili didn’t even notice, too busy staring at whatever papers were on his desk, trying to make himself look busy. Or preoccupied with more important things than whatever possible assassin was stalking their hallways.

Who was dead? Or at the very least injured?

“You okay?” The question couldn’t be kept down any longer, not when she was white knuckling the edges of the seat of her chair.

“I’m great,” she replied. “You?”

He smiled. She returned it. His father noticed.

Great, his whole family thought he had caught feelings for her in the space of a meal. This would only serve to underline it. It wasn’tfeelings. It was appreciation. She was very easy to appreciate. In fact, she deserved all the appreciation he had to give her. Good conversation wasn’t easy to come by. That was all.

“I’m fantastic,” he answered her.

“Normal Friday night at the Dmitri Kuznetsov mansion?” she inquired.

“Absolutely. We like to be kept on our toes.”

“I’ll remember that,” she said. “If I’m to keep with your traditions, I mean.”

“Oh, yes, I think that’s probably best. Wouldn’t want to rock the boat.”

“Right,” she said, narrowing her eyes at him. “I mean, it’s really more a ship, isn’t it?”
