Lucas was lying between my legs, kissing the lowest part of my belly, only inches away from the spot that couldn’t get enough of his mouth.

“I was here the whole time,” he said and looked at me with caution.

“What?” I sat up. “You didn’t board the plane?”

“There was no plane. I mean there were obviously planes that flew to Seattle. I just never planned on boarding one of them.”

“Why did you say you are leaving then?” I asked, and he shrugged.

“I thought it would be romantic to kiss you at that party like it was originally planned, and I knew it would win me extra points if I did it out of the blue,” he lifted a finger in the air, warning me he wasn’t finished. “And before you jump all over me, it worked, so, you’re welcome.”

I rolled my eyes.

“And what am I thankful for now?”

“For the surprise. You were throwing yourself at me for a week. I had to pretend I was leaving to shake things up a bit. If you knew I was staying, that kiss wouldn’t be much of a surprise.”

“Asshole!” I squealed and laughed at the same time. “I wasn’t throwing myself at you.”

“Oh yeah?” he asked, his voice husky and sexy, and he pulled me back down on the bed. “What were you doing then?”

“Seducing you?” I asked only half-joking.

Lucas hid his face between my legs, but I saw his grin, and I could feel his body shaking with laughter even before I heard it in his voice.

“If that makes you feel better,” he said and his tongue pressed my clit hard.

I moaned and continued the argument.

“You can laugh at me all you want, Cole, but you can’t keep your hands off of me.”

“I’m not even going to try.”

Epilogue

Clementine

A year later

I arrived at Sea-Tac late in the evening. It was the beginning of December, and it was so cold I had to use a real winter jacket instead of what I usually put on back home in California.

Lucas was waiting for me at the airport with a huge grin as always. I ran to him and he squeezed me in his arms, buried his nose in my hair, and inhaled deeply.

“Explain it to me one more time,” I could hear the longing in his tone. “Why do we have to live so far away from each other?”

I smiled and kissed his chest. I was actually pressing my lips against his jacket, and I was pretty sure he didn’t even notice I was kissing him.

“Because we love each other, and it doesn’t really matter.”

I wanted to say it like a statement, but it came out as a question. He narrowed his eyes at me.

“Liar. You hate it too.”

He was right. I hated it. At the beginning, it made sense. Him staying in Seattle and me in California. But I hated every minute we were spending a thousand miles away from each other.

I smiled, threw my hands around his neck, and pressed myself to his body.

“I have a very important confession to make.”
