He closed his eyes with annoyed look on his face, but I knew it was just an act. He knew I was messing with him.

“You and your secrets, nemesis. Shoot.”

“I hate that,” I tugged on his winter jacket. “I hate the cold. I don’t want to live in a place where raining for ten days in a roll is considered a normal weather.”

His laughter echoed around us. I loved it when he laughed because of me.

“Is that your problem? The freaking weather?” I nodded. “It’s a good thing you don’t have to live here then. If only your boyfriend was willing to come live with you in California, you wouldn’t even have to spend a night in Seattle…”

He offered to transfer a hundred times, but I always stopped him. I loved the independence I had, but I missed Lucas. And I had enough of this back and forth we were doing for the past year. Once a month, one of us was visiting the other. We used the fact he was coming home for Christmas to make two visits this month. But it wasn’t enough. I tried to imagine what it would be like if we actually lived together. And I started laughing.

“What’s so funny?” he asked.

“I tried to imagine what it would be like for us to live together, and then I remembered we already had.”

“That one doesn’t count,” he sucked my lower lip, and it made me squeeze my thighs. “This time around we would be alone,” he wiggled his brows.

“That would be nice,” I said with a tone that suggested I wanted to be alone with him that very second. He read my mind as always.

“It could be arranged,” he said, and his hands tightened their grip around my waist, but otherwise he didn’t move. He was just looking at me with a serious expression on his face.

“Are we doing this or not, Clementine? I want a straight answer and not thatwe’ll seebullshit you’ve been feeding me for months now.”

I took a deep breath. Everything felt so right. So I just placed my cheek on his chest.

“We’re doing this.”

In the summer, Lucas came back to California. My father got to use those connections he wanted to use for me before I left for England and helped Lucas transfer.

I was spending a lot of time in the bakery, mybakery, and Lucas balanced between his new job and his classes, so the only time we had for each other was on the weekends. So when one Saturday I had to wait Maddie at the airport and drive her home to mom, I felt guilty it took most of my day.

I finally got back home late in the afternoon, took the two steps that were the only space between the front door and our tiny living room, and I stopped. Lucas was lying on the couch with a satisfied look on his face.

At first, I blinked not really knowing how to react. But then I remembered this wasn’t even really our apartment. It was a rental.

“Are you trying to get us kicked out?” I tried to sound calm and in control, which was hard because I was obviously living with a crazy person or a twelve-year-old.

“It’s pre-approved”, he deadpanned.

“Not by me,” I snorted.

A huge daffodil flower sticker was decorating one of the walls. It looked bigger than our couch.

“You don’t like it?” he was suppressing a grin.

“It’s huge.”

“The one on your ceiling was exactly the same.”

I approached him and stood right in front of him.

“Is this about marking your territory? Because I’m pretty sure I could find another place to live with my next boyfriend, so he wouldn’t have to look at that.”

Lucas grabbed me by the waist and dragged me into his lap. I straddled him and he kissed my neck.

“AndI’mpretty sure you won’t have a next boyfriend, nemesis.”

The words rolled off of his mouth more like a promise than a tease. I ignored the meaning behind them partly because I was way too excited about the thing he implied and partly because I was already thinking about the erection he was pressing against me.
