“I want that thing off the wall now,” I said and squeezed his hair in my fists to make him look at me. He was looking at my mouth with need. The same need that I felt inside my chest. I rolled my eyes. “Fine. First thing tomorrow morning.”

He got up from the couch with me wrapped around him. A moment later I was pressed against the same wall the daffodil was on. Damn, that thing was huge. Lucas’s gaze caught mine before he started talking.

“Get used to it. One day I’ll put a ring on your finger, nemesis. And that thing stays on the wall until then.”

Two years later

I was standing on the street waiting. Someone bumped into me. Hard.

“Spencer,” I said before I even turned back.

“Asshole,” Hannah greeted me. “How’s my girl doing today?” She kissed me on the cheek. “She doesn’t expect it, right?” Hannah pointed at me with a finger and an expression that said I better not screw this up.

“First of all, I think you meanmygirl. And second of all, I’ve been waiting for this long enough. No way in hell am I ruining it by hinting her a second earlier than I have to.”

We started walking towards the jewelry store. Hannah seemed excited. She was bouncing up and down, asking questions and making suggestions. I, on the other hand, was sweating everywhere I could possibly sweat, and we were just buying the fucking ring.

“Where are you going to do it? In a restaurant? Can I come watch? I swear I’ll hide behind a menu the whole time. She won’t know I’m there,” she paused, then yelled. “No! I can shoot a video! You’ll watch it with your children and grandchildren. Or even better! You could postpone a little and get the whole gang together, and we could all surprise her.”

I had no doubt that by the whole gang she meant our families. No, thank you.

“Don’t make me regret I called you, Spencer. Just shut up and try the fucking ring. Are you sure you wear the same size?” I asked her for a millionth time.

“Yes, jackass. I’m sure. I tried four of her rings yesterday when I came to your place. We are still wearing the same size.”

“Didn’t she ask you why you’re trying her rings?” I narrowed my eyes at her. “If she suspects something, it would be on you.”

“I had a date later, and I asked her for a necklace to go with my dress. She just gave me the whole jewelry box and went to take a shower. She didn’t even see me when I tried them on.”

“Why the hell were you on a date? You live in Boston.”

I honestly hoped Hannah wasn’t moving back home right now. She would turn the wedding arrangements in a circus.

“Girls have needs,” she shrugged.

“Don’t you have a boyfriend?” I asked trying to remember a name that Clem mentioned some time ago. “Stew or something?”

“Steve,” she corrected. “And no. I’m totally single. Again.”

I sensed by her tone she wasn’t loving that fact. But I wasn’t about to pity her.

“Don’t worry, Spencer. You’ll find a nuthead who will want to be with you.”

“Oh, you’re so sweet,” she pretended she was moved by my comment for a second and then her voice snapped back to her normal sassy one. “And brave. I could pick the ugliest ring there is in that store. Something to make Clem cringe every time she looks at it.”

I threw my hand around her shoulders, and I laughed.

“You’re a catch, Spencer, and you know it. And you’re here only to try the ring, not pick it. Don’t get ahead of yourself.”

I knew exactly what I wanted to give my nemesis.

I had already gone to that store to see the ring. It was perfect. White gold with a yellow diamond in the middle. I knew Clem would get it the moment she saw it.

Hannah tried the ring, confirmed it was the perfect size, and ten minutes later I shoved her into a diner for a thank-you-for-your-help chocolate waffle before I went back home.
