“I asked your mother.”

She looked at me, and I could read the expression on her face. “My mother rarely talks about her family…our family. She said everyone is gone now, and she doesn’t want to look back. She didn’t even have photos growing up. She gave this to you?”

“I told her exactly what I wanted to do. What I wanted to create,” I replied, walking up behind her. “A palace that is for us both. A palace where our daughter will see us both. It’s not finished yet. I still wasn’t able to get your father’s parents, and then I had one I hope you will like—”

She spun around and kissed me so quickly I couldn’t finish, nor did I mind. Wrapping my arms around her, I kissed her back, holding her to me. It had been a crazy year, with so many ups and so many downs. But because of her, I had survived it all.

My first year as king.

“Look what you’ve done—made me cry,” she said when our lips broke way, and I reached up to clean her eyes. “Why are you so perfect?”

I shrugged. “I told you we’re blessed—”

She rolled her eyes and hugged me to her again.

I kissed the side of her head. “One year down…decades more to go. Are you still with me?”

“Always and forever.” She smiled back at me. “You and me at one hundred and one for sure.”

“I love you, bevilën.”

“And I love you more, Your Majesty.”

“Not possible.”

“Very possible.”

“I disagree,” I said with my head raised high.

“I disagree with your disagreement,” she said with her head raised high.

“Very well, we will put it to a vote then,” I replied, turning to our left. “Iskandar, Wolfgang…who is more in love with whom.”

“She is, sir.” Wolfgang grinned.

“He has been corrupted by you,” I said quickly. “He’s always on your team. Iskandar, I’m counting on you, to be honest as always.”

Iskandar stared at me blankly before saying, “I believe she has you, sir.”

My shoulders dropped. “I have no allies, I see.”

“You have me!” She grinned victoriously.

“But how am I supposed to beat you in an argument when they all take your side?”

“Don’t argue with me.” She shrugged.

I laughed. I could have said so much more, but I left it at that, leaning down and kissing her lips.

Here was a good place to end it.

THE END
