Everything in the world felt right after I made love to her. After I’d kissed every inch of her and heard her moan my name over and over again. After we were both breathless, staring into each other’s eyes.

It was so silent I could hear my heartbeat and the sound of snow falling around us.

“Do you think we could get snowed in?” she asked, drawing circles on my chest.

“That would be amazing,” I said, looking up at the ceiling. We’d fallen off the couch and ended up on the ground with only coats over us. “We could play house here and have no reason to see anyone. But sadly, Ersovians are good with the snow.”

She shifted the coat, rolling over to lay on my chest, looking down at me. But she didn’t say anything.

“What?”

She kissed over my heart before looking at me. “I love you, Gale.”

“I love you, too. With everything,” I said, cupping the side of her face, stroking her cheek.

“And because I love you so much, I’m trying, Odette. I don’t know how to be the best husband, but I am trying.”

“I’m trying, too,” she whispered. “Gale, I want to support you. I want to be everything I can for you. I’m not expecting you to tell me everything. But please understand, I can’t handle secrets about other women or your love life in general. I’d rather know than be left thinking and panicking over it. Even if you’ve done nothing wrong, it still leaves me with a pit in my stomach.”

I sighed, nodding. “I get that. But it is not like it is easy for me to talk about it. And not only that, but I don’t want you to see…the uglier sides of the monarchy.”

“You mean what you all are doing to Sabina?”

I frowned but nodded. “Yeah, that day I asked you to go on the train, I figured that’s what we were going to do. I think some part of me asked you to leave because I didn’t want you to see. I didn’t want you to be disappointed in me.

“I’m having my ex called everything in the book all over the internet and newspapers. I’m a little bit disappointed in myself. I used to criticize all the tricks and plots in the palace when I was younger. I always told my father or brother we should just face people truthfully. And now I’m doing it.”

“You gave her a warning, and she didn’t listen. She didn’t play fair or do what’s right, either.” She pouted, resting her chin on me. “I won’t lie; I’m seeing a new side of you. But I saw it happen with my mom and Yvonne. Yvonne used to plant stories against her all the time.”

That reminded me. “If they hate each other, then why did your mother give all her shares and yours to her?”

“I was shocked, too. One moment the paper is saying she took over; the next, she gave it all back. But apparently, that’s why she was rushing home. She made a deal with Yvonne.”

“A deal?”

“The company for her and Augusta’s silence.”

My eyebrows rose. “She took the company hostage.”

“Pretty much.” She made a face.

I laughed. “I think I should hire your mother as one of my advisors.”

“Please don’t!” she half begged, half laughed. “We have enough drama.”

“We do.” I nodded. “But you and I will get through it together, right?”

“So long as you don’t fly anyone else—”

“I won’t!” I held my hands up and swore like a boy scout.

“Good…” Her voice faded as the sound of her stomach rumbled and growled loudly.

A wicked grin spread over my face. “Should I look for something strawberry?”

“Shut up!” She pushed me, trying to get up, wrapping the coat around herself immediately. “Do you think we can get food? Because of the play at the chapel, we didn’t end up having lunch.”

“I’ll call for some.” I sat up looking for my phone when I remembered I gave them to Iskandar.
