Many couples had a preference when they request my service or at least a vision of what they’d like, so I could come up with some suggestions for them. The best clients had specific requests and just weren’t comfortable with doing the shopping and the installing themselves. When I had been a kindergarten teacher until a couple of years ago, I was much more…shy, reserved. Since I opened this business two years ago, I had to force myself to push past any insecurities I had and quickly too. Most days I spent browsing isles of adult toy shops looking for something fun, new, kinky and erotic, to have on hand for my customers. Now my bedroom looked more like a storage unit filled with a stockpile of flavored lotions and vibrators. Which of those items were going to work for Bob and his…partner? I looked at Bob and couldn’t even begin to guess. Asking the leading questions never got any easier, just some couples made them less uncomfortable.
“Are you looking for a certain…theme?” I asked.
“Yes. Sex,” he replied.
Duh.
“I was asking more like… a submission room or something more…like a mirror ceiling, vibrating bed, or maybe a sex swing?”
He had told me that I only had a week to get the project completed. That meant I had to work with what I had in stock or could easily order and get shipped within the deadline.
Bob looked a bit shocked at my forwardness, then replied, “I’d like to keep this room a…surprise.”
Now I was surprised. Others might be thrilled with such freedom, but I was terrified. The risk of disappointing Bob was too great. I needed something, anything, to go on. “You’re giving me carte blanche regarding your house?”
“No, just this room,” he replied.
Bob wasn’t grasping what I was trying to say. “Bob, this is still your home. I don’t want to make any holes in the walls or ceiling unless I have your full permission to do so.”
“It’s given as long as you can meet the deadline we discussed,” he replied.
At no point did I ever think I’d be debating turning away work, but one week to create something from scratch might be more than I could pull off. It would mean working more than just my usual 9-5 hours.
“Do you have a limit on the spending?” I questioned.
He shrugged. “Have no idea how much this stuff costs,” he stated.
“It’s like anything else. You can spend a little and get a little, but I can still make you something….fun. Or if you want something grander, you can spend a lot and get whatever you dream of.”
“You think you can do something for under two thousand?” he asked, looking doubtful.
“Most definitely. That should get you a room that you’ll be able to enjoy and leave a little room to upgrade later if you choose to.”
“Sounds like what I’m looking for,” he said. “Can’t wait to see what you come up with.”
Neither can I.“I guess I better get some measurements while I’m here. Will you be available tomorrow if I come and start painting and setting things up?” I asked.
“Yes, I’ll be working from the house this week. Just call me when you want to start, and I’ll make sure I’m dressed.”
I’d appreciate that.
I nodded and then pulled out my notepad and did a quick sketch of the room. One window, one door. That made it so much easier. “I hope you don’t mind if I use a different color in here.”
“Like I said, I want this room to be a total surprise. Go as wild as you want.” Then he reconsidered and quickly added, “Just no pink.”
I grinned. “It wasn’t on my list.”
“Good. Nothing too…girly if you know what I mean,” he said.
“I do,” I replied. I jotted down some notes and the room dimensions. “Okay. I have what I need. Well, mostly. We discussed that I require a deposit prior to starting the job.”
Bob pulled out his wallet and handed me ten one-hundred-dollar bills. “Is this enough?”
“Yes it is.” I pulled out my receipt book and wrote one out for him. “Are you sure you don’t have any other things you’d like to mention before I start?” Because it really would help me to help you.
“Nope. This isn’t about me. It’s about Sam,” he said.
