“No, what?” she asked.

“We both like our privacy. So Sam, please respect that. If he stops in again when you’re there, just…make yourself invisible. Don’t be asking him questions or anything. I…really like him and don’t…”

“Don’t want me to fuck it up. I’m good at that. Because I don’t want something serious, I guess I treat you like you don’t either. But we’re different people, who want different things. Even though you create sex rooms, you’re so uptight you probably never would use one even if you’re given the chance,” she said.

If you ever stop talking, I might just get to use one tonight.

There was a knock on the door, and I said, “Why don’t you answer it while I finish what I’m doing?”

She got up and answered the door. When she returned, she was holding a FedEx envelope. “Looks like someone has some important mail. Do you want me to open it or do you want to wait till Monday so you aren’t late for your date?”

I had no idea who would be sending me something. All my invoices come over the email and I pay them online. “Go for it. Open it.”

She sat on the couch and opened it. But instead of reading it out loud, she read it to herself. “Are you sure you can’t spend any time with me this weekend?” she asked.

“I already told you that I’m spending it with Sam. Sorry, I promise that I’ll make time for us during the week, next week. Okay?”

“Nothing will change your mind?” she asked.

“No.” I was really looking forward to my time with Sam and from his text earlier, he felt the same way.

She pulled out tickets and said, “Then I guess I’ll have to find someone else to go with.”

“What are those?” I asked.

“Concert tickets. And not just concert tickets, but VIP concert tickets for none other than my favorite group.”

I had no idea who that was, or who would be sending me tickets. “Who are they from?” I asked.

“I looked and there was no name on the envelope. Just the tickets with a note.” She handed it to me.

ENJOY THE SHOW

“That’s it? Nothing else to say who they are from?” I asked.

“They must be from your boyfriend. Who else would send you tickets?” she asked.

“Why would he send them to me when he’s seeing me tonight. He could surprise me with the tickets in person.” It didn’t make any sense. I’d done plenty of jobs, but VIP tickets like these went for thousands of dollars. None of my clients would do something so elaborate. “It must be a mistake. They probably were supposed to go to someone else.”

“Then even a better reason for me to use them instead of you,” she replied.

“Why is that?” I asked.

“I have two reasons. First, you’re busy with Sam, and secondly, you’d feel all guilty about using something that really was meant for someone else. I, on the other hand, don’t,” she smiled. Then she got up and said, “I better get going.”

“Why are you leaving so suddenly now?” I questioned.

“I need to go shopping. Can’t go to a concert in this,” she said.

“It’s not tonight,” I reminded her.

“Nope, but I need something fun to wear tonight so I can find a date for the concert tomorrow,” she laughed.

I rolled my eyes. Whatever. At least I won’t feel guilty about ignoring you all weekend.

“Okay. Have fun and I’ll see you bright and early on Monday,” I said.

“Unless the band asked me to travel with them, then I’ll see you when I see you,” she laughed and headed out the door.

And I’ll make sure to have bail money ready for you too.

I picked up the envelope again, and still had no clue who they were from. I could spend hours researching or just be happy that at least someone was going to enjoy them, but something in me said they weren’t sent by mistake. But why they were sent was a total mystery.

And that mystery will need to wait till Monday too. I have much more exciting things to do with my time this weekend.

I tossed the empty envelope in my purse and grabbed my overnight bag that I had packed and left by the door. It wouldn’t be long before Sam had me forgetting my own name never mind anything about some dumb tickets.
