Sam

“Hi Dad, how are things going?” Danny asked. “Is everything okay? You usually don’t call on Sunday.”

“You make it sound like I only call once a week,” I replied.

“Dad I love you but I can set my watch by you. You always call on the same days at the same times. So tell me, what’s changed? You sick or something?” he asked, sounding worried.

“No. I’m not sick. Healthy as I was when I saw you a week ago.” Actually, probably better since I’m not trying to keep up with the grandkids.

“Then what is it? Is your business having problems? Do you need some money?” Danny asked.

“Danny, I am financially sound. I don’t need or want your money, but thank you for offering. I just…had some free time and thought I’d call,” I lied.

“Sure. I don’t believe you. Are you going to make me try to guess what the issue is or are you just going to tell me. And if you choose not to, then I will be forced to tell Carli and she is relentless when it comes to wanting answers.”

Don’t I know it.

“I…need advice,” I admitted.

Danny paused. “I don’t think you’ve ever asked me for advice before. This must be serious.”

There was no joking in his tone. And what I was going to discuss with him, wasn’t a laughing matter either.

“I…met someone,” I said.

“You met someone. That’s what you want to talk about?” he asked.

“Yes and no. I don’t need advice as to what to do with a woman. It’s just that…I might have…”

“Screwed it up and need to know how to fix it?” Danny asked.

“Something like that. Actually, it was my friend Bob who screwed things up. I just was stupid enough to have sided with Bob.”

“Oh, Dad. That was…dumb. Sorry, but I’ve known Bob my entire life and the guy doesn’t think before he speaks.”

“Or acts. I know,” I replied.

“And yet you defended him, why?”

Because he’s my friend. “Because I believe in what I was saying. He’s immature, and a player and does stupid shit, but he’s harmless. She thought that he was a…creep.”

“Dad, the last time I saw Bob, he made a pass at my wife. Well, we weren’t married at that time, but we were dating. Creep would be a word I’d use to describe him. I never understood why you guys were friends anyway. You’re nothing alike,’ he said.

That was true. I’ve spent my life bailing him out of trouble. Maybe that’s why we were friends. He needed someone logical and reliable around him. Someone to watch over him because no one else did.

“I’ve known him a very long time. We might not be alike, but that doesn't mean we can’t still be friends.” That was a fact.

“Yet you’re going to let a friendship come between you and this woman? What’s her name by the way?”

“Randi,” I replied.

“With an I or a Y?” Danny questioned.

I laughed. “I. Randi is a woman.”

“Not judging. Just checking. Okay, so tell me about Randi. What is she like? Please don’t tell me you met her through Bob.”
