Carli said, “If you call her number, does it go directly to voice mail?”

“I haven’t called her. She said she wanted to be alone. I’m giving her space to think. That’s what she said she needed so that’s what I’m giving her,” I explained.

“Why are men so smart and so dumb at the same time?” Carli asked. Then added, “She said she wants space to think. Do you think that she is thinking good things about the two of you or wondering why the heck you haven’t reached out to her when you know she’s hurting?”

This was too confusing. I had to play that back in my head to make sure I heard it correctly. “So she asked me to leave her alone, which in a woman’s head means don’t leave me alone?”

“No. Of course not. But it also doesn’t mean for you to sit back and let it fester in her so all she has is the anger to think about and not remember how much you care about her. You need to act, and quickly, or she might close off her heart and then…good luck. Women can be stubborn,” Carli admitted.

“You don’t know the half of it, Dad. If I were you, I’d listen to Carli.”

Do I have a choice?

“Flowers?” I asked.

“When did this fight happen?” she asked.

“Last night,” I said.

“Then yes to the flowers, but don’t send them. Deliver them. Not roses because everyone does that. You have to think about what she likes so she knows you put thought into it,” she explained. “And then don’t invite yourself in. Ask her out for a walk on the beach or maybe for ice cream. You want to be some place neutral.”

“I can do that.” I remembered seeing daisies in her house on the shower curtain and decorations in her bathroom.

“Sam, I have one more thing to add,” Carli said.

“What is that?” I reluctantly asked.

“Don’t over think it. Let the words flow naturally. Talk from your heart. If you are in fact in love with her, then the words you say will be the words she’ll be receptive to.”

“Thanks Carli. I’ll remember that,” I replied. “I better let you guys get back to your family day.”

“Dad, you’re family too. And good luck tonight. Call me again if you need me,” he said.

“Thanks, Dan.” I ended the call and slipped my phone in my pocket. It was still early enough for me to grab flowers and stop in at her house. I just hoped it was going to be as smooth as Carli made it sound. For some reason, I didn’t think it was going to be.

An hour later I was ringing her doorbell. The door opened and right away I knew this wasn’t going to go smoothly.

“Oh, look who finally decided to apologize,” Samantha said sarcastically. “Here my sister is worried about Bob not treating me nicely and it should’ve been you she should be worried about.”

“Hi Samantha. Is Randi here?” I asked, ignoring her sarcastic accusation.

“Of course, she is. She’s in her room, probably crying her eyes out. What’s it to you? You think you can make it all better with flowers?” she questioned. “They’re not even roses.”

“Sam, who are you talking to?” Randi’s voice called out from the other room.

“You might as well tell her I’m here, because I’m not leaving,” I said firmly. I got it. Samantha was pissed at me. I deserved it too. But this was not Samantha’s house and I wasn’t here to see her.

Randi came to the door when Samantha didn’t answer her. “Sam, what are you doing here?” she asked.

Remember what Carli said. Don’t go in.

“I came to see if you’d like to go for a walk with me,” I asked.

“A walk. How lame,” Samantha grumbled. “Least you could do is offer to wine and dine her at a five-star restaurant.”

“Samantha, please, let me handle this,” Randi snapped.

“Randi, I’m serious. You can’t just give in to him. Make him work for it,” she said.
