“Only if you forgive me too,” she replied, giving my hand a gentle squeeze.

I wanted to wrap my arms around her and never let her go. But it was still daylight, and we were on a public street corner. Instead, I handed her the flowers and said, “I never gave these to you.”

“Daisies. They’re nice. Thank you,” she said, taking them from me.

“I figured they might be your favorite flower,” I said.

She looked at them and asked, “Why daisies?”

“They were the decorations all over your bathroom. It’s the only flower I saw at your house,” I explained.

She laughed. “Those aren’t daisies. They are sunflowers.”

“Really? They look like daisies,” I said. “Guess I can’t get anything right.”

She reached a hand up and touched my cheek. “Sam, you have no idea how much it means to me that you thought about the flower and not just picked up roses.”

“But I was wrong,” I reminded her.

“No. The flower was wrong. The gesture couldn’t be any better. Thank you,” she said, and kissed me lightly.

“You’re welcome, sweetheart.” I looked around and there were families out in their yards, children at play. I wanted to be someplace private. “What do you say we go somewhere else?”

“Why don’t you bring me home,” she said.

I nodded. “Okay, if that’s what you want.” I had no idea what I’d said to make her want distance again, but I’d respect her wishes.

“Not my home. Yours. You promised me the weekend, and the weekend isn’t over,” she said.

No, it’s not.

“Did I tell you that Monday is a holiday?” I asked.

She looked puzzled. “I don’t know of any holiday tomorrow. What is it?” she asked.

Smiling I replied, “It’s a rekindle the flame day. Do you feel like spending it with me?”

“Oh, I think we might need to celebrate for more than a day. What do you think?” she asked.

“I think…no, I know, that my flame is burning just for you, Randi. I love you,” I said, then quickly added. “Sorry, I know that sounded so cheesy. It was meant to be romantic.” Something I’m not.

“It was beautifully said. I love you too, Sam. Now take me home before I do something inappropriate and we end up becoming the talk of the neighborhood,” she requested.

I had no idea what tomorrow was going to bring us, but tonight, we were going to celebrate the only thing I was sure of. Us.
