It showed he’d listened when I was talking. Yes, I wanted to go camping. I had asked Lizzy to go with me several times, and she always came up with some ridiculous excuse. It was supposed to be a beautiful weekend. But I didn’t know him well enough to go into the woods with him. That’s not smart on any level. I could easily tell him that we could try once we got to know each other better. But that would be like saying I expect us to. Who knows how long this…interest was going to last? Lizzy was right, I needed to open myself up and just enjoy this moment. When it ended, then I could go back into my work 24/7 mode.

It clicked. I had the perfect resolution. Smiling to myself I asked, CAN I BRING MY FRIEND LIZZY?

I figured that would be a hint that I wasn’t ready for such a secluded adventure just yet but it was almost like replying yes.

CAN I BRING MY BROTHER? He asked.

That wasn’t the response I expected, then again, Richard was a lot harder to predict than I had first thought. It was hard to know if this was all supposed to be a joke when you’re reading it. At least over the phone I would be able to hear his laughter.

I think he mentioned being one of six. He spoke about his family more than he did about his work. It sounded as though his family were all business. How was he going to pull off getting one of them to agree to a last-minute camping trip? Maybe the same way I would with Lizzy. Guilt.

This probably was the dumbest thing I’d ever done, but I sent one last text.

SURE. CAN WE TALK MORE ABOUT IT AFTER WORK TONIGHT?

He agreed, and I slipped my phone into my purse. This wasn’t a joke. We’re going camping. This could be the best weekend I’ve had in ages. All I needed to do was grab all my gear out of storage and I was ready. So why was my heart racing?

I knew what it was. It wasn’t the fear of something going wrong, it was the fear of everything going right. Why was it so easy between Richard and me? Logically, we don’t fit, yet we did. And I’m not sure I’m ready to be…happy like that again.

But it was too late. I had agreed, and Richard probably was already reaching out to one of his brothers. That meant pulling extra hours repossessing cars before the weekend, so I didn’t lose any money.

There was just one thing left to do and that was to deliver the good news to my BFF.

Lizzy, since I can’t kill you, I’m making you come with me.
