“Don’t be silly,” Frey replied. “I’m here to help.”

Wilder watched the man work, suddenly noticing the gentle touch and the small hands. He drew in a scent, and it hit him. “You’re an omega.”

Frey’s gaze flicked up. His eyes were wide.“Wh-what makes you say that?”

“Am I wrong?”

Frey paled.

“You know you’re safe with me, right?” Wilder asked. “I wouldn’t share that with anyone.”

Frey held his stare before returning to cleaning Wilder’s hand. He avoided Wilder’s gaze, not answering.

“Would I still be employed here if the answer was yes?”

“Of course,” Wilder replied.

After Frey patted his knuckles dry, he reached for a bandage. Once it was on, Frey looked at him again. He just barely nodded.

Wilder smiled. “If you’re ever in danger, you come to me. Okay?”

Tears welled in Frey’s eyes. He nodded, his lips clamped shut.

“We’ll never speak of this again unless you need something. No one has to know.”

“Thank you.”He released Wilder’s hand. “That should take care of you for now, but you really need to be more careful. You’ll need that hand to tend to your mate and child.”

Wilder grinned. “I’ll try to be better.”

“Good.” Frey wiped something from his eye. “I need to return to work.Andorder our breakfast.”

“Wait,” Wilder mentioned, putting out an arm to stop Frey from leaving.

Fear entered Frey’s eyes.

He lifted his hands in surrender. “I just want to know why. Why did you need to do this?”

“My story’s similar to Avery’s… but I’ve only myself to care for. My parents weren’t wealthy, and there was little to nothing after they passed. I would’ve been homeless and penniless in the Omega Quadrant if I hadn’t made this decision. I sold everything I owned and had just enough money to pay for a new identity and the first doses of the pills. I slept in the park for a couple of weeks until I got the job in the secretarial pool downstairs and could afford a room in a boarding house.”

“That story about how proud your papa was?”

“A fib. He would’ve been proud.” Tears welled again. “If he were still here. I know he would.”

“After this is all over, I think my omega and you should talk,” Wilder said. “It sounds like you two have a lot in common.”

Frey grinned. “I wouldloveto.”

“Do you make enough? To care for all your needs?”

“Oh, yes… my salary here is very good. Being promoted to your desk came with a generous raise, and I’m quite comfortable.”

“Still… if something comes up and you don’t have anywhere to turn…knowthat I want you to come to me.” He stood a little taller, realizing his words could be misunderstood.“To my omega and I. Wewill help you, if you need it.”

Frey nodded his head, eyes bright.“Thank you.”

“You’re quite welcome.”

Wilder urged Frey out of the bathroom and rounded his desk. Apparently, his brother had been at it again, organizing his workspace it appeared. He sat down, glanced through his messages, and then tackled his emails. After his breakfast had arrived at his desk, a knock came to his door.
