Sam and Lilly seemed equally as stunned by Fallon’s reaction.

“I have never seen him stare at any girl like that,” Sam said at last. Turning towards me, she said, “I’m truly sorry Adelaide. You’re just really pretty, and obviously I’m attracted to girls. I kind of thought you realized that with the whole sitting-on-lap thing.” She looped her arm around Lilly’s waist and planted a kiss on the other girl’s cheek. “But please don’t think I’m a crazy stalker or a lesbian freak.”

She sounded honestly terrified that I was going to judge her. I understood completely; I had, more than once, given the boys an appreciative once-over when they were shirtless. It was human nature to stare at the sex you were attracted to.

I smiled at the girls to show them that I wasn’t mad. “I’m actually flattered.” They still looked anxious, so I gave them a wink. “Apparently, I still got it.” I gave a stupid hip shake, and Sam burst into laughter.

“There’s always this stigma with us that we can’t be friends with other girls because we want to jump their bones,” Lilly said sullenly.

“But we want to be friends with you,” Sam hurried to add. “The guys talk about you all the time. They are practically our brothers, and we were dying to meet the mysterious Adelaide.”

“Though I don’t know how you put up with them,” Lilly added. “I can only deal with those boys in small doses.” She shuddered delicately, and Sam whacked her girlfriend’s butt. I had to admit that they were a cute couple. It made me slightly wistful to have something like that of my own. Maybe I could talk Calax into wearing matching couples’ outfits...

“So, spill,” Sam said, placing her elbows on the counter and her head in the nest they created. “How did you end up with Fallon’s team?”

I thought it was strange how she phrased it - Fallon’s team. Not friend group. Not family. But team.

Did they go to the same school that the boys went to?

“I knew Declan when I was younger,” I began hesitantly. “And I met Calax two or three years ago. The others I only met a few months ago. They’re my friends.” I chose to keep the details of our meetings to myself. Though they seemed nice, I didn’t know these girls. I would be the first to admit that I had trust issues.

“How long have you been dating Fallon?” Sam asked. She handed me a steaming cup of hot chocolate, lathered with whipped cream and marshmallows. If I hadn’t already forgiven her for staring, I would’ve then. She was officially my new best friend.

Taking the cup eagerly, I took a tentative sip. Damn. Too hot.

And then I thought about her question, and the hot chocolate flew from my mouth.

“Fallon?” I asked in disbelief. “No, you got it wrong. I’m not dating Fallon. He actually kind of hates me.” Maybe hate was too strong a word. I’m pretty sure we progressed from hate to a strong dislike with the occasionalneed to strangle.

Both girls stared at me dubiously.

“I don’t know about that,” Lilly said at last. She exchanged a knowing look with Sam, and Sam giggled.

“Honey, the man looks as if he wants to eat you alive. Trust us when we say he doesn’t hate you.”

Now it was my turn to stare at them in disbelief. Sure, I may have been slightly dramatic when describing Fallon’s feelings for me (or lack thereof), but I knew for a fact that Sam was pulling my leg. I would definitely be able to tell if that was the case. And if he did want to eat me, it was probably because he was a cannibal who had gotten sick of my talking.

“So what about you guys?” I asked, changing the subject. “How did you two meet?”

They began to tell me how they were put onto the same team, Elena’s team, and were assigned a job in Japan (whatever that meant). While they were on a mission, they both fell in love with a French tourist there, as well as each other. Apparently, the duo was actually a trio.

“Lance is away right now,” Sam told me. She exchanged a worried glance with Lilly. “We haven’t seen him since everything went down.”

“Where is he?” I asked. I could see how difficult it was for them to talk about. They obviously loved this man, this Lance, and it pained them to be separated from him. To not know what had become of him.

“Down in California,” Sam supplied. “We’re still trying to convince our team to go down there with us.”

“They say it’s too dangerous.” Lilly rolled her eyes.

“But we’re going there with or without their help.”

I smiled at them. It had only be a few minutes, but I was already beginning to like Sam and Lilly.

“Please be careful,” I said. “And I hope you find him.”

The two girls were silent, each sipping their own cups of hot chocolate. Elena came in at one point, grabbed the other cups we had made, and walked back out. I could hear the guys thanking her before the door closed.

“You know,” Lilly began. “You don’t seem too weirded out about us being in a three-way relationship.”
