“So it’s true,” he breathed.

I didn’t bother acknowledging him.

With two men flanking me, we traveled down a winding trail bogged down with weeds. Some were growing strong while others were trampled. The trail took us away from the main entourage of buildings and to a smaller one, resembling a warehouse in appearance.

The terror I hadn’t felt moments before appeared with a vengeance. I dug my heels into the ground in an attempt to stop our momentum.

“Come on,” one of the men growled, pushing me forward. “We don’t want to hurt you.”

“Aren’t you going to kill me?” I asked. It would make sense. I had the parasite running rampant within me, and it was only a matter of time before it impacted my logical thinking. Unless…

Unless the government wanted me for notorious reasons.

Dissect me? Experiment on me?

The possibilities were endless.

We entered a door big enough to fit three of us walking side-by-side comfortably.

The inside showed nondescript silver walls, a collection of computers unattended, and hallways expanding in either direction like a six-legged spider. It was one of those halls the men led me down, their hands loose on my elbows. This would be the time I would fight back. Kick ass and take names.

But I was tired, so damn tired, of fighting a losing battle.

I wanted to sleep for a thousand years and wake up when this whole nightmare was over.

“If you’re not going to kill me, what are you going to do to me?” I asked bitterly. Before anyone could reply, a large figure stepped in front of us.

Nothing about him was significant or memorable. blond, shaggy hair. Nose too large over lips too thin. A mole on his cheek.

“You’re a tough girl to get ahold of,” he said, and there was an undercurrent of something in his tone, something I couldn’t place. A darkness, almost. An anger that was personal.

“Do I know you?” I asked.

He smiled sharply, showcasing two rows of shark-like teeth.

“I met you before.” His smile grew. “You and your boyfriend. You might’ve not seen me. After all, I did hit you from behind.”

His words instilled fear deep within me, sort of like being dunked head first in the Arctic Ocean.

Another epiphany assaulted me then.

These men…

They worked for my parents.

I didn’t know how that scraggly cat was still alive. Honestly, I would’ve thought it’d be dead by now.

I’d never liked cats. Kind of prissy creatures, if you asked me. Needy and bitchy and willing to claw off your face if the need arose.

Still, my hand fisted in the black cat’s fur, freshly cleaned thanks to Tommy. Mof. My Only Friend.

Addie always had a penchant for the dramatics. It was one of the things I loved about her. She couldn’t just be normal, not my girl. She had to be extra. Instead of a ten she was a one hundred.

“Are you fucking listening to me?” Ryder screamed in my face, his hands moving to my shoulders and shaking. I blinked up at him. Everything was hazy, the sort of feeling you would get if you were high. My mind was just as blurry, unable to connect any of the pieces, any of the words floating to my ears. Distantly, I was aware of Fallon falling. Asher screaming as he stared at the now flat tires of the van. The assholes had shot them, I remembered. And then...
