“Then we’ll just have to make each day better than the one before,” was her response.

Chapter Twenty-One

Evelyn

Weeks passed, and then months, and somewhere along the way, they earned my trust again.

I passed my exams and stayed at the top of my class. I was excited for the coming year, and knew that this time when I walked in the campus doors, I wouldn’t be alone. It was refreshing to come home to an apartment filled with light after a long day, and it was wonderful having my best friend back. All those months ago, when she had come to me in the middle of the night and begged me to return, it seemed like a different life. Hannah was back to her usual self. We joked and picked on each other, she was just slightly more upper crust than she let on, and one day, she tried instant ramen.

“Urgh!” she cried, spitting the noodles back into the cup, “How did youliveoff this stuff?!”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“It tastes pretty good when you’re broke and hungry!” I argued.

“It tastes like chemicals and sodium,” she grimaced.

She might not typically be a snob, but I could tell that she missed having Andrew at her beck and call.

“Then just be glad that we’re always sent home with leftovers,” I laughed.

My phone started ringing, and I pulled it out to see Julian’s name flashing up on my phone.

“Hey, babe,” I said.

Hannah mimed gagging in the background. Very maturely, I stuck my tongue out. Then I left the room before it could escalate.

“How are you?”Julian asked, and I smiled.

“I’m good, how’re you?”

“Just winding up a very busy day—I don’t suppose you’d want to go out tonight?”

“With you? Always.”

I could hear the smile in his voice when he said he’d pick me up at eight. That only gave me an hour, but I wasn’t worried. Julian and I had spent so much time together, and he’d seen me at my worst, so I knew however I looked, he’d still love me.

“I’m going out tonight,” I sing-songed through the apartment, and when I walked back into the kitchen Hannah was rolling her eyes.

“Yeah, yeah, your love life is alive and well, yadda yadda yadda…” then she went back to glaring at the ramen like it had personally insulted her.

“Oooh… you soundbitter,” I crowed.

“I’m not bitter,” Hannah grumbled, but something in her expression had me pausing.

“Who is it?!” I cried, rushing over to her.

“No one,” she declared.

“Oh, but it is!” I stood there, gleeful that I had found out something about my friend.

“It’s Mike,” she relented almost immediately.

“Ooooh, likeMikeMike? Like Mike I—oh…”

Like Mike I kissed at the party almost a year ago. Like Mike that had fawned over me and crushed on me and followed me around like a puppy.

“Whatever, yeah, but basically, he asked me out and just—would it be weird?”
