OCTAVIA

Irun my hands down my little black dress, trying to settle my nerves. The thought of watching Georgia paw all over Lincoln tonight doesn’t exactly fill me with joy, but he wants us there, so I’m not about to tell him no.

Plus it’s a night I get to spend alone with Finn, and it feels like it’s been forever since we did that.

The low neckline makes my girls look extra bouncy, and the curls of my hair fall nicely down my back. I’ve gone for a subdued, natural look for the evening, because the whole idea is not to have any attention on us. Plus, Millers is a super high class place, and I’m pretty sure we only got a table because of the Knights.

Apparently the waitlist is like eight months long. Freaking ridiculous.

My phone buzzes on my dresser and Finley’s name lights up the screen.

Finn:

I’ll be there in five.

Me:

Sounds good. I’m ready when you are.

I grab my clutch, sliding my phone, keys, and wallet into it and pick up my stilettos before padding down the stairs.

“You look beautiful, Miss Octavia,” Smithy gushes as I reach the foyer. He’s got his weekend bag packed and his long coat on already.

“Thank you, Smithy. Looking forward to your weekend with Matthew?” My stomach flips at the thought of him. I refuse to believe that Smithy’s slice of happy is part of the cause of my misery.

I’m pretty sure that whatever cologne he was wearing is a generic one, which is why I haven’t mentioned it to anyone. Unless Finley tells me he’s found proof that it’s Matthew that was working with Panda, I’m not going to put any weight behind the thought.

“Yes, we’re heading to my sister’s for the weekend.”

“Oh, he’s meeting the family, this is a big step.” I smile at him as I slip into my heels.

“He already met my family,” he says, moving toward me. “And I can’t thank you enough for making him feel welcome in our home.”

“He makes you happy, Smithy. As long as he keeps doing that, he will be welcome here.”

Smithy drops his bag and hugs me tightly. “Thank you, Miss Octavia. I hope you enjoy your dinner date with Master Knight. You have my number if you need anything.”

“I do, but I won’t use it,” I say, squeezing him back. “And hey, it’s Spring Break since school got out today; if you extend your trip, I can totally fend for myself.”

“So it is!” he exclaims as he pulls back. “I might just keep that in mind.”

“Just let me know if you do, or if you need the jet,” I say as the buzzer sounds, letting us know Finley is here.

“You’re too generous, Miss Octavia. Now have fun. I’ll keep in touch and let you know my plans.”

“Love you, Smithy.”

“I love you too, Miss Octavia.”

I wave to him as I leave the house, knowing he’ll lock it up securely before he leaves. I sashay down the drive, putting an extra sway in my hips when I see Finn’s grin from where he’s leaning against the car.

“If Lincoln didn’t ask for backup tonight, we wouldn’t be going anywhere,” he growls, pushing from the car and taking me into his arms. “You look good enough to eat.”

I laugh softly. “Pretty sure that’s not as filling as where we’re going.”

“Oh, pretty girl, pretty sure I could fill you up,” he winks, and I laugh at him again.

“That was terrible.”
