She gave me a look, but she said nothing. So, I filled her in on what she’d missed. When I finished, Beatrice stayed silent. “These soldiers . . .”

“More may come.” I hoped I was wrong, but I wasn’t sure. “And I don’t know how Hebert fits.”

“Should I handle her?” Beatrice murmured.

“It would be easier,” I allowed.

Beatrice flashed a satisfied look my way. It was as close to a gloat as I’d seen her come—well, with me.

“This doesn’t mean I’m suggesting she die,” I clarified.

“Nor have I offered to commit that act today.” Beatrice smiled at Ally, as she approached. “If Miss Crowe grows bored of you, child, you may call me.”

Ally straightened up to diminutive height and met my ancestor’s gaze. “I’m loyal to Geneviève.”

“Well, of course you are child.” Beatrice nodded. “I shall allow Tres to remain human for now.”

“Draugr. . .” I started.

“Not a pig,” Beatrice said mildly, clarifying her point.

“A pig?” Ally echoed. “You can do that?”

“I will send someone to watch Madam Hebert,” Beatrice said. The glint in her eyes didn’t inspire a lot of confidence in the safety of the elder Hebert, but protecting racists wasn’t my priority.

Then she was gone.

And I was alone with Ally watching the sun rise. I still didn’t know how Madame Hebert fit in, but I knew that Daphne and her soldiers were gone. I knew that the grant was now harmless.

And my friends and husband were safe for now.

The king ofElphamewould undoubtedly have opinions about this mess, and Iggy . . . I had no idea what to think about him. Was he a loa? Or had he simply caught Baron Samedi’s attention?

“Are you okay, Boss?” Ally asked.

“I am. Weirdly so.” I shook my head. “Maybe I shouldn’t be, but . . .”

Ally gave me a sad look. “You married your soulmate. That makes even the lousiest things okay.”

I hugged her, wanting to chase the sad away. “And I have good friends. That helps a lot, too.”

She grinned. “Truth, Boss. Fuckingtruth.”

Later, I could conquer the rest. In this moment I was a woman who had great friends, a weird but loving family, a well-paying job, and an amazing husband. Life was pretty okay. And the rest of the disasters could wait. I was enjoying sunrise with my friends, and then I was going home toElphameto my husband.
