“Your phone,” she yells again.

I swim to the steps and do a little jog to the table next to my chair.

Nine missed calls.

“What in the world?” I unlock my phone and see calls, all from Danny.

I dial him back and immediately get an answer, “hello.”

The voice is low and raspy and is definitely not my brother.

“Jax. Where’s Danny? He called me a ton of times. What’s going on?” my words come out rushed.

“There’s been an accident Chalene.”

“A what?” my stomach bottoms out and I swear the ground I’m standing on pivots.

Alyssa immediately senses the urgency and rushes to my side.

"Can you get to the hospital or do I need to send a ride?" his words are eerie and unwavering in strength and it makes my entire body clench.

“Yes! Alyssa can bring me!” my words elevate now, frightened.

“Stay calm and come to MUSC. I’ll be here when you get here.”

He doesn't say anything else and hangs up.

We pull into the dark garage and goosebumps scatter all over me. I didn’t talk the entire ride. I couldn’t. I just listened, listened to Alyssa trying to keep me calm, reassuring me.

She parks and I jump out of the car before it even shuts off.

“Hang on Chalene. I’m coming.” She catches up but I don’t slow down.

I begin running to the sliding glass doors and practically land on the first desk I see with a body present.

“Can I help you?”

“My brother,” I stammer out of breath. “Danny. Danny Colbert.”

The oversized man’s stubby fingers type away at his keyboard and then peer around his computer screen, “we don’t have a room with that name ma’am.”

"What? Yes, you do! My brother was in an accident."

“Try Jax Astor,” Alyssa chimes in over my shoulder and the man types again.

“He’s in room 109.”

“Which way?” My breath feels more constricted than before.

Why wouldn’t my brother’s name be listed? Maybe Jax was the only one hurt.

The man points behind him and we both walk as fast as we can through the double doors and into the hallway for the emergency patient rooms.

112…111…110…109!

I rush in the door and Jax sits alone on the side of the bed. His head lifts slowly to me and his eyes hang low. His face is grey and stagnant, void of anything other than…death.
