“Where’s Danny?”

“I’m so sorry Chalene.”

I grab my chest feeling like my heart is literally going to stop at any moment, “No!”

"Someone ran a stop light and hit us on your brother's side," he continues quietly.

“No! I fall back on the wall and Alyssa immediately grabs my arm to comfort me.

“Oh my god!” she whispers.

"No, no, no, no…my head shakes as I stare straight at the man I once idolized, fantasized about, looked up to, and now I saw nothing there…but a man in a suit.

He stands and takes a step toward me and I hold a hand up begging him to stop.

A Doctor comes into the room, "Ms. Colbert?"

“Y-, yes?” my voice shakes.

“Is your brother Danny Colbert?”

I turn to Jax.

“I let them know you were coming,” his words are solemn.

"Yes, I'm Chalene Colbert. Where's my brother?" I had the tiniest sliver of hope left in me.

“I’m afraid your brother has been in a fatal car accident with Mr. Astor.”

The words hit me like a ton of bricks and knock the wind out of me. Now it's true and my jaw drops as I look at Jax and fall in the seat next to me. Alyssa grabs my hands and buries them in her chest as the doctor speaks but I no longer hear him. Everything is a blur as my eyes turn to Jax one more time.

He took my brother from me.

***

Jax had a driver pick us up and we didn’t say a word the whole ride home. I couldn’t speak through the tears if I wanted to.

My whole life just got ripped away. Danny was all I had in this world, and now he was gone. My stomach plummeted every time I thought about it.

When we pull up to the house the grey skies and thick raindrops match my mood. The car parks and Jax finally speaks, "let's get you inside."

Alyssa followed us back in her car and jumps out to catch up with me, wrapping her arm around my shoulders.

My body follows the motions of getting inside, but I swear I’m on the outside floating above…watching.

Is this real? Are we really here? Is he really gone? Can’t we just rewind the day? Make one change that cures it all?

Jax waits, shutting the door behind us, and then whispers to Alyssa, "can you give us a moment?"

She looks at me and I nod. She heads to the kitchen and I follow Jax to the living room.

“Firefly,” he starts and I hiss.

“Don’t call me that,” my arms cross over my chest holding myself tight.

“What can I say? What can I do? I’m so sorry.”

My eyes slowly drift over to his. The last time I stared into those eyes, they were filled with mystery, wonder, and excitement, but now they were dull, broken, and guilty.
