Before I could finish he cut in.

“Please and thank yous. I know, I know, you tell me every time.”

Then he was gone.

Teal chuckled. “He sure is cute. How do you ever say no?”

I laughed. “It’s not easy.”

Getting up off the ground where I had been kneeling, Teal and I stood in silence for a moment. Her eyes assessed me and I wasn’t sure what she saw, but I found myself hoping it wasn’t all bad. That was a new revelation for me because for so long I hadn’t cared what people thought, but for the first time, I wanted her and the other women to like me.

And then I wondered why it would matter.

When I left I would never see them again.

Uncomfortable with the quiet, I searched for anything to say. “Congrats on the new baby and getting married.”

Her sparkling eyes fitting her name perfectly twinkled with happiness. “Thank you.” She looked away and seemed to be thinking before she glanced back at me and spoke again. “It is all very new to me and things were far from perfect not so long ago. Maybe sometime I can share my story with you if you’d like?”

I felt my brow scrunch up in confusion. Why would she want to do that? I found myself blurting out the question.

“Why would you want to?”

“Because although our lives or situations may not be the same, maybe just one thing I say can help you or someone in some way. I haven’t known all those people downstairs for very long and I certainly didn’t come here trusting anyone, but they saved me. I think we could be there for you too.”

Now I was more than a little curious about her story and I still didn’t understand why everyone was being so nice to me.

But it felt good.

“That would be nice,” I told her.

“Let’s go have some dessert. After, Summer said she was taking you to the condo. You will love it.” She graced me with a huge smile, then chuckled a little and the sound came up a little devious.

What is that about?

“The security on your floor is amazing,” she added as she walked off.

I followed behind her and down the stairs more than puzzled at what was going on. As we reached the kitchen where a big group seemed to be gathered I heard Gyth telling Rowan they were taking me to the condo.

His dark eyes landed on mine as they widened in surprise, but a slight smile lifted the corners of his mouth.

“Is that right?” I heard him say to Gyth, his gaze never leaving mine. “Interesting.”

I turned toward Teal, pulling my gaze from Rowan’s, and realized all the ladies were now gathered around us.

“Why is going to the condo so interesting?” I asked the whole group.

I felt a little nervous now and wasn’t sure if I wanted to go. Something was going on and I was out of the loop and didn’t have the slightest clue what was happening.

“I have a feeling things will change for you there just as they did me,” Teal said.

“Amen, sister!” Alley shouted and the ladies giggled.

My eyes strayed back to Rowan’s and I noticed the sexy smirk he had on his face then. Something was seriously up with everyone and I felt like I had shifted into an alternate universe.

I also had a feeling I was in deep doo-doo.
