I glared up at him with annoyance.I told you. She’s fine.

Yeah, but—

Drew, please. I know you’re worried, but I need rest. Do not talk to me in the next four hours unless her water breaks. I have a dinner party to attend tonight, and I’m dying. Good night.

My teeth ground together as I followed Drew down the stairs. Jeff was passed out in his arms again. The peace talks to create the treaty, along with the news about the Mindolin’s destruction, had both ruined my plans for a quick revenge. How long could I keep Jeff under my control and my secret from his family? He wouldn’t intentionally tell them, but it could slip out.

“I’ll carry him to his place.” Drew walked right past Dalton. “Stay here until I get back.”

The larger warrior’s legs carried him much faster than mine did me as we climbed down his porch and walked across the yard to the trees.

“How did he get poisoned? You said it was in his cookies?” The warrior’s voice was a deep growl. He intimidated me. I knew he would before I’d come here, but knowing something and experiencing it were two different things. On top of that, I still didn’t know how I was going to take this particular warrior out. After Life’s revelation in today’s meeting, I now knew I had time to figure it out, though.

“Yeah, Carmon and Nathaniel don’t think he was targeted, but grabbed the wrong package of cookies from the store.”

“I hope Sylee doesn’t blame herself.”

My eyebrows drew down. “Why would she blame herself?”

Drew turned his head to speak over his shoulder at me. “She’s the one who bought the cookies for him.”

Ah.

“Well, she probably saved some other poor soul by letting Jeff take the hit. He can handle it better than regular people.”

Drew grunted. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

When we reached the house, Drew sighed. “Do you know where he keeps his key?”

“On his car keys. Right here.” I maneuvered around him, and the hair on my neck rose at having the danger behind me. I’d done my research. Drew Lanshay was known to fly off the handle and be quite violent. Thankfully, the lock was new and gave me no trouble so I could burst into the house quickly. “Here we go. Home sweet home.”

The big man headed to the stairs. “I’m going to put him into bed, and then I’ll be leaving. Dalton will bring Nate over.”

There was no decent way to stop him from doing what he wanted. Jeff’s brothers were going to find out we were sharing a room eventually. I’d just hoped Jeff would be the one explaining it to them.

Without comment, I followed the Earth Lord up the stairs and opened the bedroom door for him. He paused upon entering.

“Jeff sleeps on that side.” I pointed to the side furthest from the bathroom.

Drew cleared his throat. “Why is your tank top on Jeff’s bed?”

“Jeff and I are sharing a room while I’m here.” I removed my over robe and hung it in the closet to the left of the bathroom. Jeff’s clothes took up half the space like he was waiting for me to move in. “I have my reasons. Jeff and Nathaniel know them and neither has put their foot down on it, so…”

Yeah, that had gone well. It was just that for as much as I hated the guy, Drew intimidated me like crazy. Especially after what Jeff had said last night and the way the warrior-healer had physically dominated over me before the meeting, even when he felt sick. If Jeff could do that, Drew could do worse.

“Does Cal know?”

“Not sure.”

Drew laid his pale-as-a-sheet brother on the bed, took Jeff’s shoes and vest off, and placed the comforter over him without another word.

“When he wakes up, Nate will need to give him some blood to help his energy come back.”

“Give him blood?” I asked with curiosity.

Drew walked to the door. “Yeah, Elementals are blood drinkers like you guys.”

I cringed. That was one part of being a Witch I didn’t care for. I’d never liked the taste of blood.
