Every one of them spoke the truth. None are our traitor.

My brothers all looked baffled. What were we missing?

No one spoke. The brothers kept looking at each other but didn’t speak. They were speaking in their heads. It took me too long to recognize it.

“Okay,” Carmon stepped in the middle of the gathered group. “I need two members of the Light Council to step up and be on the Council we’ve made for the world. I’m assuming you know what I’m talking about.”

Heads nodded. Dion Sanders, the man who’d sat at our table the night Jeff had embarrassed me, and another woman raised their hands.

“Dion Sanders and Angel Tullis, thank you. Your predecessors signed the treaty before they were killed, so that is still intact. Everyone, listen up. We are out of time. The treaty needs to go to the races now. Adam, you and the Neutrals will go with the Council to spread the word since the Neutrals are amongst the Light. However, make sure the Neutrals know they now have representation. Dalton and Grace will continue to protect the Demons as Jeff will protect the Witches. Chris and Sophie, make sure the Dark are safe. That leaves us with the Vampires. Drew is protecting his family, so Sylee and I will protect Victor and Torres.

“Everyone, keep your eyes open and your heads down. Travel fast and with few stops until you get to your people. Get them motivated. We know it’s possible for all of us to work together. We made a treaty to prove it and were attacked by members of all races. Good luck, everyone. Keep in touch.”

Fear trickled to me from Jeff.

Are you okay?I asked my mate.

I’ve never been worried about my brothers losing their lives, but this is crazy. Now I fear for us all. We shouldn’t separate, but how else do we spread the word?

He was right, and I had no answer for him. His skin was still pale, and somehow—with the Elemental bond, maybe—I could feel his exhaustion coming through to me. Carmon had explained after the attack that I’d become a Lower Healing Elemental. Did that cause this new ability?

We should grab our bags,I told him. Jeff had taken them upstairs to the bedroom we’d shared before the babies were born, so I headed that way. It wasn’t lost on me that that was the last time Jeff had slept. It was twenty-four hours, or more, ago. He’d used loads of power since then. Yes, he’d received blood, but that would only keep him going so long.I’m driving us to the palace.

Fine.

The fact he agreed when there was so much danger told me even more how bad off he was.

There were only a few items outside the bag I’d packed, so I threw them in and pulled a shirt out for Jeff. Chris hadn’t returned, doing his job as protector.

Nathaniel had his bag ready when I returned downstairs. The noise from everyone gathering their stuff to go was loud on my ears, but Carmon wasn’t quieting anyone for the baby’s and Jazz’s sake. We needed to move out.

Sophie was hugging her brother and Chris when I got down the stairs. They were readying to leave.

“What’s going on?” I asked her when Chris, Saber, and Anverse walked out the door without the crying Lady Lightning. “Why aren’t you going with them?”

She hiccupped and bit her finger to get herself under control. “We decided I need to stay with Jazz and the babies as another protection and as a healer. Sylee and Grace are staying as well.”

“Oh, maybe I can be of help?”

The Dark Elemental shook her head. “You can, but not here. You are a member of the Council, and you and Nate need to take the treaty to your people. Jeff needs to protect you both. If there was another Witch on the Council, I’d welcome you in a heartbeat, but you have a job that is just as important as ours to accomplish.”

My heart ached to leave the other Ladies behind to do this job without me, but she was right. The job I’d been given was of equal importance. Hopefully I’d be back with them soon.

“Let’s load up.” Jeff took the bag from me and slung it over one of his shoulders before taking my hand and leading Nathaniel and me from the house. We walked to one of the SUVs parked in the drive, the one we’d used before, and Jeff opened the driver’s door for me. “Drive the speed limit, little one. It will draw less attention to us.”

“Do you have the copy of the treaty?” I asked before he closed the door.

“Nate has it.”

At least someone did.

Nathaniel took the seat beside me while Jeff lay down in the seat behind us, the bag taking the third row. This would be a long drive, but Nathaniel and I couldn’t transport ourselves with magic since Jeff was with us. Even together we weren’t powerful enough for that. The long drive would just have to do. It would take even longer now that I had to drive the speed limit.

“I hope one of you knows the way.” I spoke to both men with me.

“Yes,” they both responded. Perfect.

“I could have driven,” Nathaniel said after we’d been on the road for thirty minutes.
