I’m alive and will live. Play along with her or she may kill us yet.

Nathaniel?

They stabbed him a few times. I’m doing what I can, and backup is on the way.

“Darling girl, who do you think I work for?” Silvia’s question had me gasping for air. I’d not expected this from her. Rico and Borgman, yes.

“There were two traitors on the Council?” I asked in a squeaky high pitch that was so unlike my deep almost tenor voice.

“Kinkaide came to me a few months ago with a proposition. One I couldn’t refuse.” She smiled at the obviously younger Councilman, and I gagged. “He offered me the Lanshays’ heads on a silver platter if I helped him free the Mindolin. As the Mindolin is the only one powerful enough to destroy all the Elementals, I had to say yes.”

“But he’s going to destroy the world as well.” Did she not understand what we’d been trying to say during the meetings?

“Don’t you understand?” she shot back. “They’ve lied to you and everyone else! They want to continue to let our world fall to pieces while they sit around watching. Those boys are merciless beasts. You should know that. Being stuck with one.”

“What do you want with us?” My mind was trying to think of a way to get us out of here, but I was at a loss. Jeff was too weak and growing weaker by the moment as he tried to save my father. My father. Gosh, Nathaniel! I couldn’t let him die.

“We need your help, young Tessa.”

“What for? And what are you going to do to Jeff?”

“We need you to help us bring the Mindolin forth. He’s been given all the blood he needs to escape his prison, all except Witch blood. The Warlock won’t help us, so we’re disposing of him and asking you. When the Mindolin is released, he will need a meal. That is where the young Healing and Love Lord comes into the plan.”

The blood drained from my face. “And if I refuse?”

“You don’t really have a choice, Witch.” Kinkaide came over and yanked me from the Demon’s hold. “We need to go before help shows up for them.”

They dragged us over to a car waiting beyond the accident.Jeff?

Get out of here, Tessa. Run.

They would kill you!

Better than them hurting you.

No. Don’t you understand? If they kill you, our world will be destroyed. I will be hurt either way.

I cannot protect you. Nate will live, but I’ve exhausted myself again.

Tears of relief slid down my cheeks. My father would live.

“Do not worry, dear. The Mindolin will thank you as he will us, for your help.” Silvia Nash still thought this was something I wanted. She was delusional. Kinkaide had chosen wisely when he’d picked her. The way he held my arm so tightly, he knew I wasn’t going to agree to their plan so easily.

“Get in.” Kinkaide threw me into the back seat of the car. I moved over for Jeff to be put in but was horrified when they threw him in the trunk. “He won’t be a problem on this ride. Neither will you.” He didn’t bind me or blindfold me, but he left no room to doubt that he’d go to those measures if I was a problem.

Keep me updated on where we are so I can tell my brothers.

I’m so scared, Jefferson.

I know, little one. I wish I could save us this time.

Maybe I could use my new powers?

No, Noodles. We wouldn’t get far with me in this condition. My family is not close enough to help us yet.

The car moved around the accident, and we headed toward Drew’s house again but turned off on a different road after a mile. After that, I had no idea where I was. Not until we were a few miles from the city.

Jefferson, we’re almost to Rusolo. Are they taking us to Mount Pickett?
