"I know, and I would never do that to you either, Rosalie." I smiled.

"Okay, let me text him back." I typed in my phone quickly. 'Hey, thanks for the invite, but sorry, Alice and I are at a coffee shop. Enjoy lunch.'

He typed back, 'miss you.'

"Aw, that's sweet." I held up the phone and showed Alice. "He said he misses me."

"He's a really nice guy, Rosalie."

"Thanks," I said. "He really is. I don't think it's so bad if I distance myself a little bit, though. I don't want him to think I'm overeager, and I don't want to just keep falling more and more in love with him, you know?"

"I get it," she said. "It's hard when you have strong feelings for someone, and you don't really know where the relationship stands."

"Yeah, it really is. Okay, let's look for these jobs."

Alice and I walked back to the apartment after our lunch, feeling pleased with ourselves. We'd sent our résumés to several jobs, and I was hopeful that at least one of them would call us.

"So what do you want to do?" she asked as we got to the apartment building.

"I don't know. Hang out, watch TV."

"Sounds good to me." We walked into the lobby, and that was when I saw Rich and his granddaughter, Maddie.

"Hi, Rich. Hi, Maddie."

"Hi, Rosalie," Maddie said, an excited look on her face. "How are you?"

"I'm good, thanks. I'm so surprised you remember my name."

"I remember it because it reminds me of a rose, and roses are my favorite flowers."

"Oh, I love roses too." I smiled. "This is my best friend, Alice. She's moved in, too."

"Hi, Alice. I'm Maddie, and this is my grandad."

"Hi. Nice to meet you, Maddie."

Rich stared at us and looked at his watch. "Can I ask you something, please, Rosalie?"

"Of course, anything. What is it? Is everything okay?"

"It is. I told my son that I'd look after Maddie this afternoon, but I forgot that I have a doctor's appointment, and well, I'm going to be having an MRI, and I don't really want to take Maddie with me."

"Oh, I can look after her if you want."

"Are you sure? I hate to impose and..."

"No, of course. It's fine. We'll just go to the apartment. We can play games."

"Can we play school, please?" Maddie said eagerly. "I love that game. I love school. I'm so good at my ABCs and 123s."

"Of course," I said. "Yeah, and we can make popcorn and have juice. I mean, if you're allowed."

"Yeah. Can I have some, Grandad?"

"Sure." He smiled at me benevolently. "Thank you so much, Rosalie. I should be back in a couple of hours."

"No worries. It's my pleasure. That's okay, right, Alice?"
