Re: Coming to stay

Really, Rosalie? And you wonder why I didn’t get you a present for graduation? I will speak to Oliver and let you know. I can’t pick you up from the airport because I’m going on a work trip for two weeks. Which I told you about when you called last night.

Foster

I stared at my brother's latest email and tried to ignore my thudding heart. He was going to speak to Oliver and let me know.I hated that I was in this position. I didn’t want to stay with my brother and his best friend any more than Foster wanted me to stay. But it was a much better option than living with my parents, who still treated me like I was a twelve-year-old preteen as opposed to a twenty-two-year-old adult woman. I decided to call him as I knew that emailing would not change his mind.

“Rosalie, I’m busy.” Foster sounded annoyed as he answered the phone, but I wasn’t going to let that deter me.

“Does Oliver have to pick me up?” The words rushed out of my mouth before I could stop them. Foster didn’t know how much I disliked his best friend, and I didn’t want to play my cards before I even moved in.

“What?” I could hear the subway in the background and ignored them. I didn’t want to give Foster an excuse to hang up.

“Can’t you pick me up?” I pleaded. “Can’t you postpone or cancel your trip?”

“It’s not like I’m going on a bachelor party to Vegas. I’m going on a work trip, so no, I won’t be canceling. Unless you want to go on the work trip for me?” Sarcasm dripped from his voice as if he wanted to rub in how successful he was. The model child to my black sheep.

“But...”

“But what? You’re the one coming to stay with me. In my two-bedroom apartment.”

“You can afford three bedrooms,” I said softly, and I giggled as I heard him gasping. Of course, I didn’t expect him to get a three-bedroom place just to accommodate me, but I loved egging my brother on.

“Rosalie, I’m going to give Oliver your number and—”

“No,” I cut him off quickly. “Give him my email address...I’m, I’m busy today, so email will be better.”

“Busy doing what?” He didn’t sound like he believed me. “Shopping with Mom and Dad’s credit card?”

“I have to pack and figure out what I’m bringing with me to New York City and—”

“Don’t bring too much, Rosalie.” His voice croaked with worry. “You’re going to be sleeping in the living room. Your bags will go in my room, but I don’t have that much space.”

“I’m not going to bring a lot. I’m just going...” I paused.

“You forget, I’ve known you your whole life.” Foster sighed. “You are not a light packer...oh, and please tell me that Alice will not be joining you.”

“No, why would you think she’s joining me?”

“Because she’s your best friend, and you do everything together.”

“I mean, I would love for her to move to New York as well, but we’re going to wait until I get a job and my own place, and then she can live with me while she looks for a job.”

“Sounds like a losing plan.” He chuckled, and I glared into the phone.

“Thanks for the support, Foster. You’re such anamazingbig brother.” Sarcasm dripped from my voice as I gripped my phone.

“Is that your way of saying thanks for letting you live rent-free in my Manhattan apartment?”

“Yes, and thank you. I love you. I’ll let you go now,” I said quickly. I didn’t want Foster to call our parents and tell them I wasn’t welcome after all.

“Wait...” He paused. “Is Alice actually coming with you or…”

“What? No, don’t worry, Foster. I don’t expect you to put Alice and me up.”

“She’s welcome to visit if she wants.”
