“I missed you,” she says, pulling me tighter into her side and unsuccessfully attempting to change the subject.

“Me too, but don’t think I’m letting you out of story time. You need to fill me in on the googly eyes you and Law seem to have for each other.”

“Ugh,” she groans. “It’s always been a one-way infatuation, Marina. Nothing to tell.”

I laugh, because her words are ridiculous. I saw the way he looked at her. It’s far from one-sided and she’s a fool if she truly believes it.

“I’m serious,” she whines. “I’ve all but thrown myself at him and he’s not once taken the bait. He treats me with kid gloves and it’s frustrating as hell.”

I purse my lips, not sure how she’s missing the way his stare lingers on her. The lengths he went to to keep her safe don’t indicate anything one-sided. No vampire would’ve stuck around for years for someone he didn’t grow to care for. Sure, she was a kid at the beginning, but looking at my sister now, she’s all grown up and absolutely beautiful.

She’s always been the sunshine in our family. Where I was all hard-edged and dark, she was delicate and light. We are night and day. Here she is, tucked away from society, and not a damn hair on her head is out of place. She’s dressed well—albeit a tad childish—but still, she radiates exquisiteness.

“You mean to tell me you two never so much as kissed?” I question.

“Nope. The most we’ve shared is my blood.”

My face screws up in disgust. “Blood? That’s your substitution for kissing?”

“It was the single most erotic night of my life,” she beams.

“Yeah, I know a little something about that,” I admit, feeling warm all over as I remember the night I allowed Julian to drink from me. Erotic doesn’t even begin to describe it.

She covers her face with her hands. “He drank from me and then acted like it never happened.”

I snicker. I can’t help it. The whole thing sounds like every story you ever hear about losing your virginity.

“Stop. It’s nothing like you’re thinking,” she says, misreading my reaction.

“It’s not like you boned him, Maggie. He sampled your blood.”

“It’s the equivalent for vampires,” she screeches. “Did he not like the taste?”

“I’m sure your blood tastes fine,” I say, scrunching my nose in disgust.

She sighs, as if reliving the scene in her memory. “It was perfect, Marina. He trailed his finger down the curve of my neck and asked me if I was sure. I was so keyed up I could only nod my assent.”

Okay, so definitely sexy as hell.

“When he bit me, it stung for only a second, before he massaged the burn away with his tongue.”

I squirm a bit at the picture she’s painting. The eroticism plays out in my head like a scene from one of my favorite romance novels. Delicious heat spreads through me just thinking about me and Julian in place of Maggie and Law. Julian and I shared one similar moment before all hell broke loose. I know exactly how it felt, and as twisted as it seems, I’d do anything to feel like that again.

“It lasted for less than a minute, Marina, and when he pulled away, he looked disgusted.”

“It sounds like he enjoyed it more than he wanted to,” I explain, as though I have any idea what I’m talking about. Julian and I have been intimate, but in the scheme of sexual encounters, I’m a novice.

“So, he pulled away and then what?” I prompt, eager to hear more.

“He practically ran out of the room. He hated it.” She lowers her head.

“He most certainly did not hate it, Mags. Give yourself some credit. You have serious sex appeal.”

She snorts.

“Well... that could use some work,” I say, and we both break into laughter.

It feels good to laugh after everything we’ve been through. Maybe we should be focused on what’s next, but for just these few minutes, I’m going to allow myself time to be young and alive with my sister.
