“If sharing your blood wasn’t meant to be intimate, why did you do it? What was the point?”

“We did it for two reasons. One, to see if there was any merit to the legend. At that point, Law wasn’t convinced I was his familiar,” she huffs. “He admits he was drawn to me, but he said he stuck around more because I was a child and afraid. He hoped to help me. His plan was to go to the Council with proof I wasn’t the familiar so they’d leave us alone.”

She bites her lip, looking like she could throw up at the thought of simply being a charity case.

“What was the second reason?”

She laughs, but it lacks humor. “He said that in the unlikely event I was his familiar, it would allow him to transfer some powers to me to keep me safe until he was able to help me escape. We were able to communicate telepathically because of the blood. We’ve only scratched the surface,” she says, shrugging her shoulders.

“When he realized you are his familiar, nothing changed?”

“Oh, things changed. Just not in the way I wanted them to,” she admits. “He hovered more. He was generally pricklier,” she harrumphs. “Essentially, he became like my father.”

I clench my teeth, baring them in anouchthat hurtsexpression.

“We were friends, Marina. That’s it. And I’ve been gone for a while. Who knows where we stand now. Law is complicated, and I don’t need any more complications.”

Now that I can understand.

“What about you and Julian?” she grins. “Law said a few things on the way here.”

I slap at the bed. “What has he said?”

“Just that his brother has it bad.”

I smile so wide it hurts. “He’s not the only one,” I admit, feeling close to swooning. “I’m in love with him, Maggie.”

“Love?” she questions with both eyebrows raised heavenward.

“Completely. Madly. Deeply.”

“Gross,” she says, turning her head to smother a smile.

“Shut up. It’s not,” I defend. “We went through a lot together. It bonded us in ways I can’t explain.”

She eyes me curiously. “You’ve slept with him.”

It wasn’t a question and I don’t say a word. A slow smirk spreads across her face.

“That answers that question. Your silence is telling, sister.”

“I don’t sleep and tell.”

She barks out a laugh. “Slut.”

“I’d hardly call myself a slut. He’s the only person I’ve ever slept with and you know it.”

She shrugs. “Tell me every detail.”

I do, because nobody knows just how deeply I care for Julian. Stacey was the only one I confided in and she’s gone. I want to scream it from the rooftops, but given everything that’s happened, our love will have to be put aside until after Marcellus and the auction are dealt with. I can be patient. We’re worth it. I share every aspect of our relationship with Maggie, as she grows quieter and more removed.

Despite being happy for me, I can tell that her own issues with Law are playing into her current mood. She wants what I have, and I don’t blame her. She’s been just as lonely as I have all these years. She deserves happiness.

“Don’t give up on him, Maggie. If you care about him as much as you appear to, things could change. Be happy to have someone in your life that cares that much about your safety.”

“I know.” She sighs. “I’m sorry. I’m trying not to be a whiny brat. It’s just... I’ve never felt like this, and to have it go unreturned sucks. Even after all this time, I still want him.” She puts a pillow over her head and screams into it.

I allow her the tantrum but eventually pull the pillow away from her face. “You never know.”
