He tilts his head to the side, watching me curiously, as if he can’t wait to hear where this is going.

I jump in, explaining all the events that led up to my finding the secret room and how Law got involved.

“Yeah, and just so we’re clear, that ghostly figure she’s been seeing—it isn’t me,” Maggie chimes in, hands on her hips and lips pursed.

“I know,” Julian says, sliding a piece of paper across the desk.

It looks like a page torn from someone’s personal journal, but the handwriting isn’t their father’s. “I found this at Marcellus’s estate,” he explains. “Take a look.”

Eventually the seemingly mismatched words start to all come together. My head snaps up to Maggie. “He suspected.”

“What exactly did he suspect?” Law asks, sounding annoyed. “What do you know that you haven’t told us?” Definitely annoyed then.

“I went to see Count Dupré.”

“You what?” Julian bellows.

I throw my hands up to stop his tirade. “I was chaperoned by Addy.”

“Not helping.” Julian grinds his teeth.

“Calm down. I didn’t get close to him, and honestly, Julian, I think you’ll be pardoning him soon enough.”

“Is that so?” He crosses his arms in anger.

“That’s a conversation for another time, but he was most helpful.”

“Why am I even surprised,” he mumbles to himself, but I forge on.

“He told me that your father instructed him to turn to the back of the hidden journal. When I did, I saw the words, “The third triplet is alive. The Fae have her.”

“Molly is alive?” Maggie gasps. “How is that possible?”

“The Fae switched her out with one of their changelings.”

“It makes sense,” Julian says. “Shante confirmed that the magic she ran into at the cabin was Fae magic.”

“So what? They’re blocking her from Shante, but allowing her to help her sister?” Law turns to Maggie. “Has she communicated with you?”

Maggie shakes her head.

We’re all silent for several minutes, each trying to work out what this all actually means. Why do the Fae have Molly? That’s the question at the top of my list.

“Listen,” Law says, drawing our attention. “This information can’t get out. The Council already knows about the legend and have tried to intervene before. We don’t know what their motives were and until we do, they can’t learn that Molly might be alive.”

“I agree,” Julian chimes in. “Whoever the traitor is will come for you two.” He looks back and forth between Maggie and me. “Not a word about this to anyone.”
